Presentation transcript:

College Credit Plus Madison Plains HS February 8, 2016

What you should know when you leave tonight: Basic program information Potential risks and benefits of program Potential costs of program Steps/deadlines with high school for entering CCP for academic year Maximum hours per year for participation Steps for applying to the institution of your choice What’s new for Summer 2016

Steps for entering the program Inform your school by April 1 of your intent to participate for academic year. CCP information will be posted on your high school website. Postsecondary institutions will have CCP information on their websites.

Steps cont. Examples of information on website will include but not limited to, admission criteria and any partnerships with local high schools. Public and private institutions will have different guidelines. CCP program will not pay for any developmental courses. Student must be college ready.

Common Questions Q. Do I have to attend college full time or may I attend part time? A. You have the option of both. Whatever is the best fit for you.

Common Questions Q. How many college credit hours may I take? A. Student attending full time, at the college, may take a maximum 30 semester hours per year.

One high school unit = 3 semester hours The number of high school courses, X 3, subtracted from 30.

Common Questions Q. What happens if I fail a class or do not complete the course? A. You or your parent will be required to pay the cost of the course and the cost of the book. (You will owe your school district, not the postsecondary institution). *Please see your district policy

Potential Risks College course offerings do not mirror the high school offerings. Scheduling required courses is not guaranteed. Students will have increased responsibility for learning.

Potential Risks Potential for social discomfort as some students may not adjust to the new environment. If a student fails or withdrawals from a college course, they will not earn credit and they will be responsible for the cost of the course and book.

Program Advantages An opportunity to take courses not offered at the high school or, in some cases, an opportunity to earn college credit while remaining in your high school. Increased course selection. Earn free college credit, after successful completion of course.

Program Advantages NEW Beginning summer 2016, students will be permitted to take summer courses Summer hours will go toward the total 30 max hours a student may earn in an academic year CCP summer hours will not be open to graduated seniors Summer hours will not count toward athletic eligibility

How do I begin? Once you have gone through the steps at your home high school, begin steps at the institution of your choice. Remember, every college has somewhat different requirements. Inquire with the college of your choice for specific admission requirements.

Southern State Community College CCP Guidelines Guidelines pertain to all students participating in CCP program whether the student is on a SSCC campus or taking the course at their high school.

SSCC CCP Guidelines Counseling with high school counselors. Complete the SSCC/CCP Application. Submit to the Records office along with a copy of your high school transcript or school record.

SSCC CCP Guidelines All CCP applicants must take the SSCC Placement Assessment and score college ready. SSCC uses Accuplacer as a testing tool. The SSCC college ready English score is a 5 or higher. College ready math score is a 90 or higher.

SSCC CCP Guidelines ACT scores will be accepted (in place of placement assessment). ACT English score of at least an 18 or a math score of at least 22, will be considered college ready.

SSCC CCP Guidelines A letter containing testing information will be sent to the student after SSCC has received the students Application for Admission and h.s. transcript or grade report. After the student has completed the placement assessment or provides ACT score, the student must schedule an appointment to meet with an advisor.

SSCC CCP Guidelines First time CCP students taking courses on a SSCC campus, must meet with a CCP advisor at SSCC to register for their first semester college courses. SSCC will assign all CCP students an academic advisor. It is suggested that students meet with their advisor prior to registration for each semester, but not required to do so after the first semester.

SSCC CCP Guidelines All new students attending SSCC are required to attend a New Student Orientation. Orientation information will be sent after the student has registered for his/her college courses.

SSCC CCP Guidelines Students enrolling in the program will be expected and required to perform at the same level as their college classmates. CCP students are subject to the same policies and procedures, academic practices and grading standards as all other SSCC students. Grading standards pertain to students taking college courses in their high school, as well.
