3 EQ How was the King strengthened and then limited in medieval England?

4 800’s Vikings attack the Anglo-Saxons in Britain. King Alfred of Wessex stopped the Vikings and united England. Alfred ruled from 871 - 899. Next rulers were weak.

5 1066 – Noble Harold Godwinson and William Duke of Normandy both claim to be King of England. 1066 – William defeats Harold at the Battle of Hastings. Anglos resisted William. He gave English land to his Norman Knights. Completed a census. Eventually Norman and Anglo customs merged into a new English culture.

7 1154 – 1189 Henry II ruled England, Wales and Ireland. Wife Eleanor of Aquitaine held some French land. Circuit Judges carried the King’s law to all of England. Common Law – laws that were the same throughout the whole kingdom. Grand Jury would decide if someone should be accused of a crime. Trial Jury would hear the case.

8 1199 King John – Raised taxes, punished his enemies w/o a trial. 1215 – Nobles meet at Runnymede and force John to sign the Magna Carta. (Great Charter) Gave people more rights. Set up a Great Council. 1200’s Edward I established Parliament. (Upper & Lower House) Step toward representative government.

11 Western part of Charlemagne’s empire became France. 987 Hugh Capet became King. Many nobles still more powerful than the King. Phillip II expanded the Monarch’s Power & Wealth. Fought England for lands in Western France. 1302 Phillip IV & the Estates General. 1, Clergy and Priests. 2, Nobles. 3, Townspeople and Serfs.
