French and Indian War

What’s going on in Europe b France and England were in the middle of a war in Europe called the King George War. b All the major powers in Europe were competing for colonies. Why would they want to compete for land across the globe? b Rivalry spread to troops in the New World

Two powers b Land disputes started to arise between England and France. b Both claiming same land in the Ohio River Valley. b The main people of the region were Native Americans. b The British wanted to move west but most of the land was used by the French. b French set up forts to protect land.

The English way of life b LAND =POWER AND WEALTH b Without land in English society, you are nothing b 1660-Man comes over from Eng. Gets 40 acres of land and has 4 sons b What happens to the land when the man dies? b What happens when each one of the sons has sons then dies? b Where is there the only place left to get wealth?

Conflicts begin b French decided to remove all British from Ohio River Valley b Governor of Virginia was granting land in the Ohio Valley to citizens of his colony

A hero’s beginning b The British sent out a young Virginia officer, George Washington, to deliver a letter demanding that the French leave the Ohio River Valley region.

b Washington suggested the British build a fort in the Valley, Fort Prince George b But French troops soon arrived and threw them out. b The French completed the fort, renaming it Fort Duquesne.

b Washington received a report that the French intended to attack his troops, so he launched a first strike against the French camp. b This was the first battle of the French & Indian War.

b Washington won that battle, but he was soon defeated by French troops sent out from Fort Duquesne, leaving the French in command of the entire region west of the Allegheny Mountains.

Native American role b Native Americans didn’t want either there. b Too big of a war to ignore, so they had to choose sides. b France had more luck in gaining NA’s as allies. b French were trappers and not farmers so they didn’t destroy hunting grounds to make farms or take as much land away

b English were mostly farmers and didn’t respect Indians rights to land or ways. b English colonists had history of disputes with Indians in western lands
