1 French and Indian War Advantages French ► Have more Native Allies ► French are unified under one government ► Many forts for protection British England has a 15 to 1 advantages in population British Navy is stronger The English colonies are easier to defend

2 The French and Indian War (1754-1763)

3 The Opening Shots ► The English were afraid they would be cut off from the Ohio Valley.  Sent George Washington, a young surveyor, to ask the French to leave. He was just 22 at the time.

4 The Opening Shots Cont. ►V►V►V►Virginia sends Major George Washington to build a fort at the forks of the Monongahela, Allegheny, and Ohio Rivers.

5 The French arrived first! ► The French built Fort Duquesne in the spot already.

6 The Battle of Great Meadows ► Washington tried a sneak attack that fails ► During the retreat, Washington’s army gets trapped in Fort Necessity. ► Washington and his men surrender to the French, but they are soon released. ► This battle starts the French and Indian War.

7 Albany Congress ►T►T►T►The congress meets to create a united defense. ►B►B►B►Ben Franklin proposed the Albany Plan of the Union, to unify the colonies under one government. ►T►T►T►The plan failed

8 How are the British doing in the War? ►T►T►T►The British start off badly in the war. 1. D o not fight well in forests of North America. (*5 students volunteers *) 2. F rench and Indians used guerrilla tactics 3. F ighting breaks out in Europe ►C►C►C►Called the Seven Years War (1756-1763)

9 William Pitt became head of the British Government (1757) ►C►C►C►Concentrates on winning in America ►S►S►S►Starts to capture many Key French Forts

10 The Battle of Quebec (1759) ► James Wolfe is sent to capture Quebec ► City of Quebec is very well defended and under the command of Marquis de Montcalm ► Quebec was the capital of New France and a key supply fort.

11 The Battle of Quebec cont. ► Wolfe orders a sneak attack at night. ► In a fierce battle both commanders die and the English are victorious

12 Treaty of Paris (1763) ► Officially ended the war even though no fighting in the colonies for three years. ► England gains all land west to Mississippi River from France and gets Florida.

13 Treaty of Paris cont. ► Spain gains all lands west of the Mississippi River and New Orleans ► France is out of North America ► Native American get nothing

14 The American and British Relationship is not good ► British say Americans did not help pay for fighting, disobey English trade law and did not help relationship with Natives. ► Britain is in BIG DEBT
