Chapter 4: The Colonies Grow Section 3: France and Britain Clash

Britain and France were competing for money and power (as English colonists moved closer the French territory, tensions grew) Colonists of British and French nationality were having small skirmishes over land in the West. *When British traders moved into French areas, the French attacked.

Native Americans Take Sides Both the French and British knew whoever had the Native Americans on their side would win the war. The French had an advantage because historically, they had friendlier relations with the Native Americans. During wars between Great Britain and France, the Native Americans often helped the French, but the most powerful group (Iroquois) ended up siding with the British.

The Iroquois Confederacy The most powerful group of Native Americans in the East were the Iroquois. It was made up of: Mohawk, Seneca, Cayuga, Onondaga and Oneida. The Iroquois played the British and French against each other. Eventually, trade agreements were made with Britain and the balance of power between Britain and France shifted.

American Colonists take action The governor of Virginia sent a young surveyor, George Washington to tell the French that the British were going to claim the Ohio Valley and they should leave. The French responded by saying ”it was their absolute design to take possession of the Ohio and by God, they would do it”.

Washington’s First Command In 1754, Washington was sent back to Ohio with a 150 man militia (this was a vocab word). Their task was: to build a fort When they arrived they found The French were already building Fort Duquesne Washington and his men built Fort Necessity and went on to attack the French and were defeated and captured but wereconsidered heroes upon their release.

The Albany Plan of Union When colonists realized there was a threat of war, representatives met to discuss options. They adopted the Albany Plan of Union, which was proposed by Ben Franklin. The colonies were against it because no colony wanted to give up authority to another colony

The incident at Fort Necessity marked the start of a full scale war – The French and Indian war. It got its name because: The British/colonists were fighting against the French and Indians.
