Alliances formed between Europeans and Native Americans in order to defend Fur Trade (Algonquians & French ) VS. (British)

5 What were the causes of the war?
Spain, England, and France competed for colonies France protected their territory New France built forts around their main settlements (Quebec, Canada & Mississippi River & Great Lakes Region) England moved west INTO the Ohio River Valley Was French Territory  FRENCH NOT HAPPY

English & French compete for FURS and also compete to claim the Ohio River Valley

8 How did the fighting begin?
Battle at the Ohio River (first battle) George Washington sent to set up British Fort in Ohio River Valley and attack French, who built Fort Duquesne on British territory Washington forced to surrender

9 What were the effects of the war?
FROM BRITISH PERSPECTIVE: Colonies showed lack of loyalty Willing to trade for greater profit than to help mother country Colonial soldiers performed poorly Colonial legislatures resisted raising taxes to pay for the war effort

COLONISTS PERSPECTIVE Removal of French power leads to desire for greater westward expansion No reason to keep British soldiers around for protection anymore Anger & Resentment at being treated as second class citizens

11 Why is this event important?
Proclamation of 1763 Britain realized that defending Western lands would be costly ($$) Passed a law that would STOP colonists from settling WEST of Appalachian Mountains Angry colonists ignored Proclamation and moved West anyways REFUSED to take orders from faraway nation. English colonists began to refuse a lot of rules that were being imposed by Britain
