Lesson 1 Key Points  Tobacco- a plant derivative that is used to make tobacco products (smoking cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, cigars, and e-cigarettes such as vape).  Nicotine- the addictive stimulant chemical drug in tobacco.  Addictive drugs- drugs that have the ability to cause the user to become physically and psychologically dependent on the chemical.  Tar- the carcinogen (cancer causer) in tobacco.  Carbon monoxide- is a colorless, odorless, poisonous gas produced when tobacco is burned.  EXAMINE FIGURE 12.1 on PAGE 301”Short Term/ Long Term Effects”

DIFFERENT FORMS OF TOBACCO

Lesson 2 Key Points  Addiction- physical or psychological need for a drug.  Physical dependence- the body feeling a need or craving for a drug.  Psychological dependence- the mind sending a message to the body that it needs a drug to feel normal.  Withdrawal- the unwanted physical and psychological symptoms the user feels when trying to quit using.  Secondhand smoke- the surrounding air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke.  Mainstream smoke- smoke that the user inhales and exhales from the product.  Sidestream smoke- smoke given off by the burning end of a cigarette (contains twice as much poison as mainstream smoke).

Lesson 3 Key Points  Cold turkey- stopping an unwanted behavior immediately.  Nicotine patch- medication that allows a tobacco user to limit tobacco use while trying to quit. Why Some Teens Start Using: Internal Influences such as Stress, Weight, Image, Appearing Independent, and Peer Acceptance. External Influences: Role models, Peers, Media, Advertising, Family members and other adults doing it.

How Not to Start:  Choose friends that don’t use tobacco.  Avoid situations where tobacco is used.  Use your refusal skills (explain why you choose to be tobacco-free)  Practice abstinence.  Know the dangers.  Know the financial and health costs.
