Tobacco is a HUGE business in the United States. Tobacco companies spend more than $24 million (US only) on advertising and promotions EVERY DAY!!!!!

10 WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT????
Tobacco companies are constantly losing customers everyday because they are quitting or dying. Therefore they want to attract new users. WHO DO THEY WANT TO ATTRACT????

11 Children & Teenagers!!!! Children and teens represent the most profitable market. * Children and teens have their whole life ahead of them, that’s why tobacco companies want them as their new customers (a customer for life).

13 Tobacco Addiction Despite the high personal costs and health risks a large number of people continue to smoke or chew tobacco. This is because they have formed an addiction.

14 Addiction- a physical or psychological need for a drug.

15 Physical Dependence- A type of addiction in which the body itself feels a direct need for a drug. Nicotine affects body temperature, heart rate, digestion, and muscle tone. Tobacco users DO NOT feel normal unless their body is under the influence of nicotine.

16 Psychological Dependence-
-an addiction in which the mind sends the body a message that it needs the drug (nicotine). - Events , situations, and habits trigger a desire to use tobacco.

23 Secondhand Smoke The air that has been contaminated by tobacco smoke.

25 2 types of secondhand smoke:
Mainstream smoke - the smoke that the smoker inhales and exhales into the air. Sidestream smoke – smoke coming off the burning end of the cigarette.

26 Question : Which type of secondhand smoke is more harmful? Sidestream!!!

27 Sidestream smoke contains twice as much tar and nicotine as mainstream smoke.

28 Secondhand smoke can cause pneumonia and bronchitis.
Infants and children who are exposed to secondhand smoke have more colds, allergies, ear infections and asthma than children who are not exposed to secondhand smoke.

Women who smoke while pregnant increase their risk of having: a low birth weight baby a premature delivery ** the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome) is higher in homes in which the parents smoke!
