5 Short term effects that can be seen very soon after a person begins to smoke:
stimulates the brain reward system  increases heart rate and blood pressure increases breathing rate increases blood-sugar levels stimulates the vomit reflex Smell like smoke Loss of taste sensation **VIDEO

6 Long term effects of tobacco use:
Addiction- physically and mentally needing tobacco Bronchitis – inflammation of the bronchial tubes Emphysema- loss of elasticity in the lungs, making it difficult to inhale & exhale Cancer – cancerous cells replicate and spread Heart and Artery Diseases ** VIDEO on picture

7 How can using tobacco effect your immune system?
Chemicals in smoke reduce the activity of the immune system so you are more likely to get sick. Damaging the immune system increases your chances of suffering from diseases such as cancer

8 What is the difference between the following types of smoke?
SIDE STREAM SMOKE Smoke from the burning end of the cigarette MAINSTREAM SMOKE Smoke that is inhaled through a tobacco product and exhaled by a tobacco smoker SECONDHAND SMOKE Combination of exhaled mainstream smoke and side stream smoke.

9 How can tobacco use affect a pregnancy?
Anything the mother takes into her body the baby also takes in. CARBON MONOXIDE in tobacco products cuts down the oxygen supply to the baby increasing your chances of birth defects, premature births, miscarriage, still births etc…

10 How does tobacco use affect families and society?
Costs the family money buying tobacco products lost of wages medical bills funeral costs Costs society money medical care, insurance costs accidental fires etc…

11 What are some ways to quit smoking?
Cold Turkey – just stop Nicotine supplements (gum & patches) – releases nicotine into the body through the skin. Body gradually weans itself off the nicotine. E-cigarette – provide enhanced smoking sensation. Acupuncture – reduces cravings and alleviates withdrawal symptoms.

12 What are some of the benefits of being TOBACCO FREE?
Less chance of getting sick, not smelling like smoke, better taste of food, money, etc…

THEN Discuss that tobacco advertisements from many years ago were looked at as glamorous. Explain that tobacco was sometimes used as “sex” appeal. In some of the advertisements shown flirty pictures show how “sexy” smoking was. There are also advertisements where doctors promoted smoking a certain brand of cigarettes. Even one of our presidents promoted smoking. WOW!
