3 Tobacco Legislation  In 1998, tobacco companies and 46 states reached a legal settlement that restricts tobacco advertising aimed at young people. Tobacco companies are required to fund ads that will discourage teens from using tobacco products.  Non-Smoking States: 25 States + District of Columbia

4 How to Avoid Tobacco  Surround yourself with positive influences  Reduce Peer Pressure  Use Refusal Skills

5 Why Quit?  Health Problems  Cost  Damaging effects of secondhand smoke  Not controlled by an addiction

6 Nicotine Withdrawal (Vocab)  The process that occurs in the body when nicotine, an addictive drug, is no longer used.  Symptoms: Irritability, difficulty concentrating, anxiety, sleep disturbance and cravings.

7 Nicotine Substitutes (Vocab)  Products that deliver small amounts of nicotine into the user’s body while he or she is trying to give up the tobacco habit.  Examples: Patches, Gum, Electronic Cigarettes and inhalers

8 Tobacco Cessation Program (Vocab)  A course that provides information and help for people who want to stop using tobacco.

9 Review  What are 4 reasons smoking among teens is on a downward trend?  List reasons to quit smoking?  Why might people use a nicotine substitute when quitting smoking?
