CHAPTER 21 TOBACCO MRS. CRUSAN HOME LIVING

ADDICTIVE DRUG A SUBSTANCE THAT CAUSES PHYSIOLOGICAL OR PSYCHOLOGICAL DEPENDENCE. ONE REASON IT IS SO DIFFICULT TO QUIT SMOKING. THE ADDICTIVE DRUG IN TOBACCO IS CALLED NICOTINE.

NICOTINE ALL TOBACCO PRODUCTS CONTAIN NICOTINE. NICOTINE IS THE ADDICTIVE DRUG FOUND IN TOBACCO LEAVES. NICOTINE RAISES YOUR BLOOD PRESSURE AND HEART RATE, AND CAN CAUSE HEART DISEASE.

STIMULANT A DRUG THAT INCREASES THE ACTION OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, THE HEART, AND OTHER ORGANS. NICOTINE IS CLASSIFIED AS A STIMULANT.

CARCINOGEN A CARCINOGEN IS A CANCER CAUSING SUBSTANCE. IN 1992 THE EPA CLASSIFIED SECONDHAND SMOKE AS A GROUP A CARCINOGEN.

TAR A THICK, STICKY, DARK FLUID PRODUCED WHEN TOBACCO BURNS. CONTAINED IN CIGARETTE SMOKE. DESTROYS CILIA IN LUNGS, DAMAGES AIR SACS, AND DESTROYS LUNG TISSUE.

CARBON MONOXIDE A COMPOUND FOUND IN CIGARETTE SMOKE, IT IS A COLORLESS, ODORLESS, AND POISONOUS GAS. TAKEN INTO THE BLOOD STREAM.

CIGARS CIGARS CONTAIN MORE NICOTINE AND PRODUCE MORE TAR THAN CIGARETTES DO. ONE CIGAR CAN CONTAIN AS MUCH NICOTINE AS ONE PACK OF CIGARETTES (20).

SMOKELESS TOBACCO TOBACCO THAT IS SNIFFED THROUGH THE NOSE, HELD IN THE MOUTH, OR CHEWED. HIGHER LEVELS OF NICOTINE ARE ABSORBED BECAUSE OF THE METHOD IN WHICH IT IS USED.

NICOTINE WITHDRAWAL THE PROCESS THAT OCCURS IN THE BODY WHEN NICOTINE, AN ADDICTIVE DRUG IS NO LONGER USED. IT IS FELT BY MOST PEOPLE WHO STOP USING TOBACCO.

NICOTINE SUBSTITUTE A PRODUCT THAT DELIVERS SMALL AMOUNTS OF NICOTINE INTO THE USER’S SYSTEM WHILE THEY ARE TRYING TO GIVE UP THE NICOTINE HABIT. EXAMPLES ARE: GUM, PATCHES, INHALERS, AND PRESCRIPTION MEDICINE.

ENVIRONMENTAL TOBACCO SMOKE CALLED SECONDHAND SMOKE, IT IS AIR CONTAMINATED BY TOBACCO SMOKE. IT IS COMPOSED OF MAINSTREAM AND SIDESTREAM SMOKE.

MAINSTREAM SMOKE THE SMOKE EXHALED FROM THE LUNGS OF A SMOKER. INCLUDES SMOKE FROM CIGARETTES, PIPES, MARIJUANA, AND POSSIBLY E- CIGARETTES.

SIDESTREAM SMOKE THE SMOKE FROM THE BURNING END OF CIGARETTE, PIPE, OR CIGAR.

E-CIGARETTES HOW THEY WORK: – CONTAIN A BATTERY, A HEATING ELEMENT, AND A CARTRIDGE THAT HOLDS NICOTINE AND OTHER LIQUIDS AND FLAVORINGS. – NO “SMOKE” IS EXHALED SO PEOPLE BELIEVE THEY ARE NOT HARMFUL TO THEM- SELVES OR THE ENVIRONMENT.

E-CIGARETTES MAY BE A “GATEWAY” TO TEENS TO SMOKING. MAKE ATTRACTIVE WITH FLAVORINGS. NOT ENOUGH RESEARCH AVAILABLE ABOUT THE HEALTH RISKS. NO AGE RESTRICTIONS IN SOME STATES. STILL GETTING NICOTINE.

HOOKAHS WATER PIPES THAT ARE USED TO SMOKE SPECIALLY MADE TOBACCO THAT COMES IN DIFFERENT FLAVORS. BASICALLY SAME RISKS AS CIGARETTE SMOKING…SOME RISKS MAY ACTUALLY BE HIGHER. MORE SMOKE INHALED, SHARING MOUTHPIECE,

SHORT-TERM EFFECTS OF TOBACCO USE CHANGES IN BRAIN CHEMISTRY INCREASED RESPIRATION AND HEART RATE DULLED TASTE BUDS AND REDUCED APPETITE BAD BREATH AND SMELLY HAIR, CLOTHES, AND SKIN

LONG-TERM EFFECTS OF TOBACCO USE CHRONIC BRONCHITIS EMPHYSEMA LUNG CANCER CORONARY HEART DISEASE AND STROKE
