Career and College Promise at Gaston College WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

What is CCP?  North Carolina’s Career and College Promise (CCP) Program provides dual enrollment educational opportunities for eligible high school students to accelerate completion of college certificates, diplomas, and associate degrees that lead to college transfer or provide entry-level job skills.  There are two pathways to pursue through the CCP program: College Transfer Pathway and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway.  Tuition is FREE, but the student is responsible for textbooks, instructional fees, and supply costs.

Who is eligible?  College Transfer Pathway (must meet the following criteria)  Be a high school junior or senior  Have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher  Demonstrate college readiness on an assessment or placement test in English, reading, and math  PSAT, PLAN, ACT, SAT, Accuplacer (Gaston College test)- college readiness can be demonstrated by a combination of passing scores on multiple assessments.

Who is eligible?  Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway (must meet the following criteria)  Be a high school junior or senior  Have a weighted GPA of 3.0 or higher OR have the recommendation of the high school principal or counselor.  Meet the prerequisites for the career pathway (Biotechnology, Computer Information Technology, Emergency Medical Science, and Health Science (Nurse Aide) require college readiness scores on ACT, PLAN, PSAT, SAT, or Accuplacer.

CCP Options  There are two ways to take CCP courses: Online or Afternoon College  Online courses can be accessed anywhere there is internet, which means students can work on them from home or in the online lab at school.  Lincoln County Schools offers afternoon college option for students who prefer to have face to face time with an instructor.

Online CCP classes  College Transfer courses are guaranteed to transfer to a 4 year public college in North Carolina.  Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses may not transfer to a 4 year college, but will transfer to other community colleges in North Carolina. CTE courses will also fulfill requirements for college certificates available in a number of vocational fields.  Interested students should see Mrs. Lackey for a complete list of available classes for online CCP courses.

Afternoon College  College Transfer Pathway courses will be held at the Lincoln Campus of Gaston College.  CTE Pathway courses will be held at the Lincoln County School of Technology.  All afternoon college courses will be delivered in a hybrid style (face to face and online)  Classes for both pathways will be during 4 th period two days per week.  On the days students are not attending face to face classes during 4 th period, they are expected to be working on the online portion of the CCP class either at school in the online lab or at home.

Things to keep in mind when considering CCP  Gaston College requires a 90% participation rate in CCP courses; students must log in and complete assignments DAILY in online courses.  Students participating in hybrid courses must attend each face to face class and log in to the online portion on the days they are not in class.  If the student participates less than 90% of the time, then he/she can be dropped from the course and will receive a “W” (withdrawal on their Gaston College transcript).

Things to keep in mind when considering CCP  Gaston College has stricter privacy laws than high school, which means they will not communicate grades or attendance to parents, counselors, or school staff until the end of the semester when final grades are submitted. Students will be able to access their grades online at any time and are responsible for keeping up with assignments independently.  High School students with IEP’s or 504 Plans should not be dissuaded from taking a CCP course. Gaston College has a Special Needs Counselor who will work with students to apply and be approved for classroom and testing modifications if necessary.

Things to keep in mind when considering CCP  When signing up for CCP courses remember that these are college classes, therefore, instructors will have high expectations for the quality of work submitted.  Instructors will have office hours on campus. If they are teaching an online course, they will provide students with their phone numbers and addresses in order to be contacted.  Instructors will more than likely not accept late work or allow re-dos on tests or assignments. Students should be prepared to challenge themselves and turn in their best work every time an assignment is due.

CCP sounds great! What’s the next step?  If you are interested in enrolling or learning more about CCP, see Mrs. Lackey.
