Presentation transcript:

For the next 25 minutes we are going to look at some SMART Board tips and tricks. Even if you are not a classroom teacher or you don’t have a SMART Board in your classroom, you will be able to glean some things out of today’s training. At the very end we have an activity that everyone will be able to participate in.

We are going to count down today with 5 activities we call tips and tricks that you may or may not have tried on your classroom SMART Board. Hopefully, you can walk away with one thing that you can try in your classroom immediately. Again, even if you are not a classroom teacher, or you don’t have a SMART Board in your class, don’t fade out on me because you will learn some things today as well.

WEBSITESEXAMPLES Starting at #5…This list below contains websites that will allow you to create animated text and graphics for your lesson presentation files. One thing that works really well in the classroom from an attention-getting or engagement standpoint is animation. This can be animated text or animated graphics. This idea is great for bell- ringers or warm-ups to get student attention immediately upon entering the classroom. Callouts or focus items during the lesson can also get more attention with animation. Also think about back- to-school night when you have your SMART Board up and a presentation running for parents.

The scrolling “typewriter” like text at the top is called a “screedbot”. The first assignment that you will work on right now is creating your own screedbot. -Using your own device go to the website : -At the website you will see a blank rectangle where you can type in a message to display in your screedbot. -Type in the text “Making up Tech Training #4 and then press the “Create Screed” button. -You will then see your screedbot scrolling in the box at the top. -In order to save the screedbot to use in your classroom presentations, you will need to select the button that says “Your Computer”. Click this button now to save a copy of your screedbot and share it with Mrs. Fairley. -If you are on a laptop or desktop computer the screedbot file is a gif file that will be downloaded to your computer. Attach that to an to send to Mrs. Fairley. -If you are on an iPhone or iPad or similar, once you click “your computer” you will be taken to another page where you can copy the link of your screedbot from the address bar. In this case, send only the link for the screedbot to Mrs. Fairley. -PAUSE THE PRESENTATION UNTIL YOU HAVE COMPLETED THIS ASSIGNMENT AND SENT YOUR SCREEDBOT TO MRS. FAIRLEY.

And now #4… Have you ever recorded any of your lessons or even portions of your lessons? The tools to accomplish this are already built into SMART Notebook. SMART Notebook has a Page Recorder and a Lesson Recorder. The page recorder allows you to record what you are doing in SMART Notebook on a single page. The lesson recorder allows you to record your screen whether you are in SMART Notebook, another application, on the internet, or whatever activity you are completing on your screen. Page recorder is located under the Properties tab; lesson recorder is located under SMART Board tools.

Open SMART Notebook on your computer and try recording a short page recording. Remember the page recorder is located under the Properties Tab: Did you record something? Try playing it back as indicated by the tools in the picture to the right.

The SMART Notebook Recorder allows you to record a lesson across multiple windows as you teach on the SMART Board. Take look at this short video (3:51) on using the SMART Notebook Recorder. Video on using SMART Notebook Recorder Find the SMART Notebook Tools icon either in your dock or under all files. If you are not connected to a SMART Board the SMART Board tools icon has a red X on it. Once recording is started, it will continue to record across all windows until it is stopped. The longer you record the larger the file so use your best judgment since saving a larger file can take quite a bit of time and hard drive space. Saved files can be posted for absent students, remediation & enrichment, and to use with substitute teachers.

And now #3… Just like animation brings engagement to your lessons, appropriately placed sound clips can do the same. This is a list of websites that contain sound clips from movies, TV shows, famous people, etc. Sounds clips can provide engaging discussion when chosen wisely for the classroom. So let’s play a game…

Your job will be to name as many of these sound clips as you can and your list of guesses to Mrs. Fairley. Remember to do these on your own and don’t ask anyone that attended the training session the 29 th for answers. It’s a lot more fun that way and we don’t want to find out all the answers without trying (like our students do sometimes ) Be sure the sound is turned up on your device! Let’s go! Click the blue circle in the speaker next to the clip you want to hear. Clip #1 Clip #2 Clip #3 Clip #6 Clip #5 Clip #4 DON’T FORGET TO YOUR 6 GUESSES TO MRS. FAIRLEY!

And now #2… Lessons or documents created in Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, Excel, or PDF files can be used with your SMART Board by using SMART Notebook Document Writer. These files can easily be converted to SMART Notebook files giving them all of the features that come with SMART Notebook. Students can write on the files, attach graphics to the files, create interactivity with the files, etc. To convert a PDF file (or any file) to a SMART Notebook file, simply open the file, select File, Print, then instead of choosing a printer from the list choose “SMART Notebook Document Writer”. The file will be converted to a SMART Notebook file. Take a look at this video to get more information: Video on SMART Notebook Document Writer

And finally #1… SMART Exchange PD SMART Exchange is still by far the #1 tool used by teachers with SMART Boards in their classrooms. Watch this 5 minute PD video on how to access, download, and edit items from SMART Exchange.

Go to the SMART Exchange now by selecting the icon above, selecting the icon from within SMART Notebook, or by going to the website indicated above. Sign up for a free account. Then search for a lesson resource by standard that you will be teaching this week. Click here to get to the SMART Exchange.

This Ticket-Out-The-Door must be completed by everyone. Index cards should be placed in Mrs. Fairley’s mailbox in the high school teacher’s lounge.

Please ensure that you have completed all of the training requirements: 1.Screedbot ed to Mrs. Fairley. 2.List of 6 sound clip guesses ed to Mrs. Fairley. 3.Ticket-out-the-door index card placed in Mrs. Fairley’s mailbox in the high school teacher’s lounge. ELU requests will be submitted by Mrs. Fairley upon receipt. Thank you for participating in Charger Thursday - Technology Training Session #4!
