WHAT DO YOU KNOW ABOUT WORLD WAR ONE?

THE NUMBERS WILL ASTOUND YOU!!!!! 8 MILLION DIED IN THE FIGHTING 20 MILLION DIED FORM DISEASE AND HUNGER (MOSTLY CIVILIANS)

SOME INTERESTING FACTS KNOWN AS THE GREAT WAR & THE WAR TO END ALL WARS 33 NATIONS INVOLVED ALL SIDES THOUGHT THE WAR WOULD BE QUICK BUT IT LASTED 4 LONG BRUTUAL YEARS!!!!!

WHAT WERE THE 5 CAUSES OF THE GREAT WAR?

MANIA Use this mnemonic to help you to remember the causes. MILITARISM (#1) ALLIANCES (#2) NATIONALISM (#3) IMPERIALISM (#4)

THE SPARK THAT CAUSED WWI Cause #5 THE ASSASASSINATION OF ARCH-DUKE FRANZ FERDINAND OF AUSTRIA-HUNGARY

Lets take a closer look at the causes!

MILITARISM Countries amass large armies and countless weapons to be stronger than other countries. Countries will go to war to show their strength.

ALLIANCES Countries enter into secret agreements to aid each other in case of war. (I got your back). Before WWI there were 2 main alliance systems Triple Entente France England Russia Triple Alliance Austria-Hungary Empire Germany Italy

NATIONALISM NATIONALISM IS GREAT PRIDE IN ONES OWN LANGUAGE, CUSTOMS AND CULTURE. Ethnic groups struggle to gain independence from countries that rule them. People do not want to be ruled by other countries and will go to war for independence. A local conflict goes global when Austria-Hungary annexes Bosnia. Serbia see Bosnia as its territory and sees the annexation as a hostile act.

IMPERIALISM Countries want to gain colonies for new markets and natural resources. Colonies make a country strong and powerful. Countries will go to war to prove their strength.

ASSASSINATION Arch-Duke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Hungary was assassination by a Serbian named Garilo Princip in Sarajevo, Bosnia. Princip was a member of a terrorist group called The Black Hand. This assassination was the SPARK that set off WWI

The SPARK sets the alliance system in motion 2 Russia comes to Serbia’s aid & declares war on A-H 1 A-H declares war on Serbia 3 German comes to A-H’s aid and declares war on Russia and France 4 France Comes to Russia’s aid and declares war on Germany and A-H 5 England declares war as an ally to France and Russia. Countries continue to join each sides including Italy which joins the Triple Alliance.

The teams of WWI The Central Powers Austria Hungary The Allies Germany Bulgaria The Allies Russia France England Italy (Switched sides to joined the the Allies in 1915)

Strategy to win the war……… Central Powers The Schlieffen Plan Objective To surprise & eliminate France by attacking it through neutral Belgium. (Western Front) After Germany eliminates France…go east to take care of Russia. (Eastern Front)

THE Plan did not go as planned… Belgium put up a better fight then Germany expected and held the Germans up. England joins the battle quickly.

THE SIDES DIG In on the WESTERN FRONT…. Battle of the Marne- The first battle of the war. The Allies stop German advancement into France. This begins a War of Attrition (wearing down the other side until they give up). Trench Warfare (1915) 400 miles of ditches are dug from the North Sea to Switzerland. Each side fights from these trenches.

NO-MAN’S LAND Each side is separated by a thin strip of land called No-Man’s Land. The war remains locked in a STALEMATE (neither side is winning)………

RUSSIA DROPS OUT WHY? Revolution to overthrown the Czar (Russian King) is happening in Russia. Russia cannot fight two wars at the same time. The Central Powers need only focus its attention on the war on the Western Front.
