3 Today’s Objective Today we will be describing the chain reaction of alliances that was put into motion by the assassination of the Archduke by using this lecture, processing worksheet and our books

4 What Happened After Franz Ferdinand’s Murder? Austria-Hungary declares war against Serbia which set off a chain reaction within the alliance system Russia, who is an ally to Serbia, moves towards the Russian- Austrian boarder and to the German border.

5 Germany viewed this move by Russia as hostile so they declared war against Russia on: AUGUST 1, 1914 Soon after, Germany declared war on France too. At this point much of Europe is locked into battle. Germany’s Reaction

6 European nations take up frontlines divided between the Central Powers and the Allies Who are the Central Powers? Germany and Austria- Hungary location in the heart of Europe That’s easy to remember!

7 Who are the Allies? Great Britain, France, Russia A few weeks later Japan will join the team. Nine months later Italy will join the team If you remember…Italy was part of the Triple Alliance, the traded sides as a defense strategy.

8 The Schlieffen Plan Germany does not want to fight a two-front war. This plan tries to prevent that The plan: All troops sent to France and force France to surrender and then focus on Russia.

9 Germany goes to France… To get to France, Germany goes through Belgium. Belgium doesn’t allow it so Germany declares war on them Great Britain comes to the rescue and declares war on Germany AUGUST 4, 1914

10 The Western Front What was supposed to be a quick battle in France turned into a long bloody stalemate. This became known as the Western Front. The First Battle of the Marne was the Allied victory that ruined the Schlieffen Plan. They now MUST fight on two fronts.

11 Trench Warfare Opposing armies on the Western Front had dug miles of parallel trenches to protect themselves from enemy fire.

12 New Technological Advancements Poison Gas Machine Gun improved The tank, armored combat vehicle Submarines, invented by the Germans (they call them U- boats) Airplanes: Dog Fights

13 The Battle on the Eastern Front Russia is struggling against Germany and the Austrian Army. Without modern technology, the Russian army hangs on through the strength of its numbers.
