4. What Happened After Franz Ferdinand’s Murder? Austria-Hungary declares war against Serbia which set off a chain reaction within the alliance system Russia, who is an ally to Serbia, moves towards the Russian- Austrian boarder and to the German border.

10. The Western Front What was supposed to be a quick battle in France turned into a long bloody stalemate. This became known as the Western Front. The First Battle of the Marne was the Allied victory that ruined the Schlieffen Plan. They now MUST fight on two fronts.

11. Trench Warfare Opposing armies on the Western Front had dug miles of parallel trenches to protect themselves from enemy fire.
