4 Causes of WWI Nationalism- Pride for one’s country rises
Imperialism- competition for colonies (territories) Militarism- Industrialization led to military growth. Diplomatic failures- No continent wide unity Alliance System- Divisions between countries

5 The Balkan Peninsula Austria and Serbia become embroiled in conflict over the peninsula as the Ottoman Empire declines. Both trying to assert control over region.

Archduke Franz Ferdinand is assassinated in Sarajevo, by a Serbian member of the “Black Hand” Assassins were throughout the route using bombs and pistols Gavrilo Princip

10 Military Strategy Invasion of Belgium brought in Great Britain.
German Schlieffen Plan- “two-front” war, attack France then Russia. Russia would take more time to mobilize. Enter through Belgium Invasion of Belgium brought in Great Britain.

11 The Western Front Schlieffen Plan does not work, stalemate across France. Germans driven 60 miles back towards the Western Front. First Battle of the Marne- defeat of Germans lead to a drawn out war around France.

12 Trenches Soldiers fought each other from Trenches.
Between the trenches, “no man’s land” Inside the trenches- dead bodies stacked to stay above the mud. Rats and disease common throughout the trenches.

13 Battle on the Eastern Front
Russian Enters(1916): Now Germany had to fight on two fronts. Russia was short on artillery, but had plenty of soldiers. Two front wars never allow for a full assault on either side. Russian Revolution sparks, they leave the war (1917)

14 The United States Enters War
1915 Lusitania Sunk 128 Americans killed. Angers US but still not entering “European War” German unrestricted submarine warfare responsible

15 Zimmerman telegram Caused the US to enter war on the Allied side. (Triple Entente) From Germany to Mexico: Keep America out of war and Germany will help you reclaim territory
