13 June 2013Laurent Roy Optical Fibers / Electronics Upgrade -Fibers need for Upgrade -> Installation ? -Two techniques possible for multi fibers installation -Different routing possible from UX to surface (3 pits) -Responsibilities for material installation -Patch panels detector side (space) -Status, Planning

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Need for Upgrade: Multimode - 50/125μm - OM3 or OM4 - λ= 850nm -144 fibers? (12 x12) / cable or tube MPO connectors Total: ~ fibers (Ken table / based on quantities estimated by the sub-detectors) Total Length between detector and DAQ: ~ 300m (Rk: 2 options still open for ‘Tell40’ position) ‘Long distance’ fibers installed today  Trunk cable: Multimode - 50/125 μm - OM2 - λ= 850 nm - 96 fibers cable (8 ribbons of 12) MPO connectors Total: 87 installed = 8350 fibers - 6 lengths ordered mini: 43m – maxi: 65m space in cable tray~2cm2/cable

13 June 2013Laurent Roy 2 possibilities for multi fibers installation 1)Optical cable blown through rigid tubes: well control by the companies for long distance (1-3 km) in Telecom installation could be separated in 3 phases (tubes, fibers, connectors) large total section needed (~ 30 tubes diam. 40mm for fibers) bending radius constraining ‘ technician time ’ for splicing very long - standard splicing (mono fiber): ~17 weeks with 2 technicians - splicing machine for 12 fibers ribbon exist (16000€: Fujikura 70R ) but not used a lot by European companies, need fibers organized per ribbon in the cable blown. need space for ‘splicing cassette’ in both ends

13 June 2013 Laurent Roy 2 possibilities for multi fibers installation 2)Cables pre-connectorized with MPO: connectors mounted, all fibers tested directly in manufacturer site (good quality assembly, measurements file provided) total section reduced (120 cables x 144 fibers, diam. ~15mm/cable) 60-70m is the length maxi EN-Cern group already installed bending radius during the installation to respect  to not break fibers cable pulled with its extremities where fragile MPO connectors are precautions to take increase time to install (need access) in cable tray lengths between racks must be measured with precision before order nevertheless, need space somewhere to ‘absorb’ the surplus. asfas

13 June 2013 Laurent Roy Preparation: supports installation during LS1 ?  supports for these 2 techniques are not the same. (special supports for tubes / cable ducts for cable pre-connectorized) Advises + Prices estimate asked to EN/EL-Optical section + to few companies ~ 1 month ago (with Rainer and Niko): UX85+pit visits on going. - End of offers reception in ~ 1-2 months  should help for our choice

PZ85 shaft New LHCb Control Room New server Rooms D3 Barack: actual Front End Boards location PM85 shaft PX85 shaft Laurent Roy 13 June 2013 Total length ~ same through the 3 pits. (PM85 ~+10-20m/PZ85) Max 300m. Daniel Lacarrere scheme

3 pits at Point 8 Laurent Roy  PX85: rejected (space keep free for ‘big detector’…, cable routing not trivial on the top)  PZ85: need to pass through the shielding wall a) access difficult (on the vault above the detectors) b) use last space available which we will be happy to have for other additional cables?  PM85: no access possible for installation during ‘ Physic program’, m longer Rk: Thanks Daniel for his help to explore all possibilities… 13 June 2013 a) b)

Laurent Roy Tell40 Patch Panel Patch cord long distance cable Patch Panel Cable chain Electronic Boards Detector cables UX85 Protected area UX85 Detector side Shielding Wall ~ 300m total length Tell40 Pit 100m ~ 100m total length Option 2 Option 3 Patch Panel PM85 PZ85 DAQ short links (10Gb Ethernet) 13 June 2013 ~ 200m length Option 1 Option4 = Option 2 + Option 3 together ? long links (10Gb Ethernet)

13 June 2013Laurent Roy installation responsibilities : ( scheme from Rainer ) Cern Team: long distance fibers, Racks, Patch panels Sub-detectors: Patch cords Sub-detectors: Patch cords

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Quantities / Patch Panels total based on the worst case scenario of sub-detector choices (Ken-end of April)

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Additional Patch Panel racks ? RB86 Side (Calo+Muon) 1 Calorimeter PP - A side (full)  add 1 rack C side 1 Muon PP for each side  add 1 ‘small’ rack in each side ? Futur CALO C MUON A MUON C2 ? CALO A MUON A2 ? MUON C

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Additional Patch Panel racks ? RB84 Side (Velo, RICH1, TT, Bunker) Velo+TT+Rich1  keep Balcony racks (if PZ85 used)  Use ‘velo analogue’ cable trays  add 1 rack C side (if PM85 used) ‘Bunker’ racks: +/- full  add few racks on Cryo platform (if PM85 used) New racks for Optical connections Bunker PP: MUON1 RICH2 IT OT Balcony PP: Velo TT RICH1 A side C side

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Space available: Cryo platform - Behind Magnet C side - near Muon and Calorimeter racks

13 June 2013Laurent Roy Planning: Sept-Oct 2013: choices done between the different options. End of 2013: supports integration done in 3D mock-up Need to find Manpower (designer) to integrate the ducts… Beginning 2014: offers request for supports installation. End of LS1: supports installation done. one optical link prototype (complete chain: transmitter -> Tell40 receiver) installed ? 2015: Call for tender (6 months) During Technical Stop of LHC ‘Physics program’ Racks, Patch panel and fibers installation, tests. First days of LS2: Long distance fibers ready.

13 June 2013Laurent Roy CONCLUSION Choice to do between 2 techniques for fiber installation Choice to do between 4 options for routing (Tell40 on surface or downstairs, PM85 or PZ85)  Cost comparative on going  Fibers Tests on going (Rainer slides) Decisions have to be takeen soon if we want to profit of LS1 to install supports in PM85 (access limited, even not possible during LHC running period). Important to have a good estimate of quantities - end of 2013: to evaluate the space needed, dimension the supports, the patch panel space in UX Racks. - end of 2014: before the call for tender Sub detectors, please look at proposal for Patch Panel racks position
