Welcome to 6 th Grade Language Arts & Reading Mrs. Breining

Background I’ve been teaching in the district for 9 years I have 4 college degrees –2 Masters in Education I graduated from San Marcos High Recently married (2-1/2 months) I have two dogs & one cat

Supplies Supplies What your student needs to have each day…. SSR Book (Sustained Silent Reading) Lined paper 2” Binder w/6-8 dividers –Writing, Reading, Spelling/Grammar Correcting Pen (red, green, or purple) –No blue or black At least 2 pencils Colored Pencils Set (optional) A positive attitude

Classroom Guidelines Be in your seat and working when the tardy bell rings Be prepared and ready to learn Treat each other with dignity and respect Follow directions the first time Follow all procedures and policies of SEMS & SMUSD

Attendance & Absent It is crucial that the students are here every day. It is the student’s responsibility to make up missing work. Extended absences – contact attendance office Students get the same number of days you were absent to make up missed work. Check my website for homework that day. Contact study buddies

6 th Grade English Language Arts Content Standards Focus on “Essential Standards” Core Novel(s) for all 6 th graders are: Hatchet Beowulf – A New Telling The Language of Literature Textbook Writing focus is on the 6 Traits of Writing Spelling Units and Grammar Textbook Curriculum

Homework / Late Work Students will have homework every night –Independent Silent Reading Homework is posted on the board and my webpage Students must write their homework in their planner everyday No late work will be accepted (not counted towards the student’s grade). –This is a school wide policy for all grade levels. –This policy does not apply to absence work

Passes Students have yellow passes they use when they need to leave the room –Health Office –Restroom Please check the passes if your student seems to be missing assignments or not understanding his/her homework. –They might be leaving class too many times.

Grades Parents and students can check the grades on-line at: –Log in: period-breining-1011 Ex: 1-breining-1011 (1 st period) 5-breining-1011 (5 th period) –Password: Student ID –You can link all classes together All grades for the week are entered by the following Monday. I use a point system for assignments and assessments. ex: 4/5…. 50/60…. 87/100

Grades Grading Scale –A = 90% - 100% –B = 80% - 89% –C = 70% - 79% –D = 60% - 69% –F = 59% and below Effort & Citizenship Grade –E = Excellent Always on task, without reminders, goes beyond –S = Satisfactory On task the majority for time, occasional reminders –N = Not satisfactory Student needs reminders to get to work –U = Unsatisfactory Student interrupts learning frequently

Eagle Bucks We use Eagle Bucks as a reward Students can get them by following the rules really well and participating with class discussions. We have four 6 th grade village activities this year, you will need Eagle Bucks to buy your ticket. 2 Movies, Village Mall, & Village Auction – –Purchase tickets and items All assignments must be turned in to go to the activity (no mis/abs in the gradebook)
