5 Curriculum Each unit will include one essay

6 Curriculum There will be three novel studies throughout the year.
1st Quarter: A Long Walk to Water 2nd Quarter: Robot Dreams 3rd Quarter: The Outsiders 4th Quarter: Hatchet *This is in addition to an outside reading book (student choice) that must be brought to class every day.*

7 Curriculum Students are to bring a book to class every day.
Their outside reading book must be different than the novel study book. Every day students will complete the bell work and then silently read their outside reading book until it is time to go over bell work. This is part of their grade.

8 We use computers to draft, revise, peer revise, and publish!
Technology in the classroom Notice the students busy using 1:1 technology. Notice the self-directed learning. Notice the great lighting and silent work environment.

9 Grading Scale

10 Grading Scale 100% - 90% = A 89% - 80% = B 79% - 70% = C 69% - 60% = D 59% - 50% = F Tests/Quizzes/Essays comprise 80% of the grade; Homework/Classwork comprise 20% of the grade.

11 Grading Zeros are not given. The lowest grade that can be received is a 50%. If you see a 50% for a grade, the student failed the assignment. If you see a 50% and a “missing” next to the assignment, the student failed the assignment because the student did not turn it in.

13 Attendance & Assignments
If your student is absent – it is his/her responsibility to get any missed work upon return. A planner is a great resource. Please do not request homework ahead of time or if your student is only absent for one day. Please check my website (under agenda) to see what we did in class and what was assigned for homework.

14 Homework Philosophy Homework is never assigned as busy work.
Students will have more nightly homework if class assignments are not completed. Therefore, encourage your student to use class time efficiently. Students can expect homework Monday-Thursday. 20 minutes of reading (outside reading book) Novel study work Grammar practice and review Worksheets in the textbook Research to prepare for classroom discussions

15 Extra Credit Some assignments can be redone for a better grade.
Tests cannot be redone, so please study! If there aren’t any assignments that can be redone, extra credit is still available through additional reading/writing assignments.

16 Tutoring After-school tutoring is on Tuesdays from
3:30-4:30pm for students with a C or lower. Please check grades on a regular basis. *Some students may be asked to attend if they are struggling with a specific concept, even though they do not have a C or lower in the class. When a test falls on a Wednesday or Friday, there will always be a test review on the Tuesday or Thursday before from 3:30-4:30pm. This is open to everyone!
