WELCOME ACP PARENTS! Mrs. McLure English I CP

Course Overview 1.Grammar within the texts 2.Short Stories 3.Literature/Novels 4.Poetry 5.Essays (test grades) 6.SAT practice (prompt writing) 7.Vocabulary within the text 8.Projects 9.Literary Terms 10.Literary Elements 11.Comprehension We will be busy!!!!!

Novels we will be reading this year Odyssey Animal Farm Romeo and Juliet The Hound of the Baskerville You will be notified when these novels need to be purchased Sometimes we purchase a class set where the students can purchase the novel at a reduced price. Parent Challenge: Read the novel along with your child

Procedures 1.Testing policy (change from previous years) Grade level teachers have their own calendar 2. Homework policy Late homework WILL NOT be accepted Fill out form Typed 3. Grading policy 55%-Unit Tests/Essays/Projects 35%-Quizzes 10%-Homework/In class assignment No extra credit-per the handbook 4. Rules particular to my class Student Performance Grade

SAMPLE DAILY AGENDA 1.Quiz - “Marriage is a Private Affair” 2.Read “The Californian’s Tale” 3.Lit Element handout-complete & turn in 4.Vocab for MIAPA & CT*** HOMEWORK QUIZ tomorrow- “The Californian’s Tale” Short Story UNIT TEST-Wed 4/9 Short Story VOCAB UNIT TEST-Thurs-4/17

Student Performance Grades Ways to lose daily points: 1.Not being prepared for class (-10pts) -no binder, no pen/pencil, no paper, etc. -not having your novel, etc. 2. Tardiness (-10 pts.) -if you are not in your seat when the bell rings 3. Conduct (-20pts & possible detention) -redirection, sleeping, eating, walking around the classroom unnecessarily -excessive/unnecessary conversations 4. Disrespect (automatic detention/0 for the week) -absolutely NOT tolerated

Student Performance Grades This is a weekly grade that counts as a Homework grade (10%). If you see any grade less than a 100%, then discuss with your child what went wrong that week. If in doubt, please contact me-I keep a running log of these grades.

ZERO’s Reasons for zero’s: NO work turned in by the student Copying from another student Sometimes (but rarely) that’s the actual grade that was earned by the student Can zero’s be made up? No. But, I can offer suggestions so that the student can try to minimize earning zero’s.

Failing Grades First and foremost: NO extra credit will be offered NO re-do’s or re-takes on test/quizzes/homework will be offered NO grades will be dropped Since a failing grade was earned through a timely process, expect a period of time to elapse (more than a week) in order for the grade to be brought up.

Failing Grades So, what can be done? The first remedy I will always suggest is- TUTORING Either with me, through the counselor or through an NHS member.

“Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” -John Dewey (only 1c)

remind TO: This is a great way for me to send reminders to students and parents. You will not be able to contact me directly through this app, rather you will still have to e- mail me
