2 Basic Teacher Information
Instructor: Mrs. Rogers Office: Room 508 Office Hours: By Appointment Book Club: M-Th, 3-4pm

3 Objective Course Objective: To enhance one’s mastery of the English language through the development of writing, vocabulary, grammar, and analytical reading.

5 Materials Materials 2 red, black, blue and green pens, or a 4-in-1 pen
2 sharpened pencils 1 spiral three subject notebook w/ pockets 1 glue stick Crayons / markers / color pencils (depending on preference) 1 metal ring for vocab note cards (can be purchased from me for a quarter) 1 pkg. of index cards 1 hole puncher 1 mini stapler Plenty of college-ruled paper Appropriate texts for this class

6 Quizzes Each day we will have Book Talks discussing the previous evening’s reading. Students are expected to bring questions to class and participate in class discussions to earn points. Those points will be tallied throughout the semester on appointed days (see reading schedule for dates) and that will constitute the quiz grade. For a full explanation of quiz grading specifications, please see the handout given in class and available online.

7 Classroom Policies Students must be in their seats and ready to work by the second bell. Any student not ready to begin will be marked tardy and will have to serve a fifteen minute detention that day after school, per Lancer Life. No one is allowed to leave his/her seat or the classroom without permission. Please do not be disruptive in class. Any disruption of the class will not be tolerated and will result in an automatic detention.

8 Classroom Policies Being prepared for class is intrinsic for the success of your education; therefore you are expected to bring your supplies to class every day. Students who voice opinions and offer information in class will be respected in the same way as the instructor, and any sign of disrespect toward the student or instructor will not be tolerated.

9 Grading and Assignment Policies
It is the responsibility of the student to acquire missing notes and assignments. If a student is absent s/he has the number of days missed to make up assignments.

10 Grading and Assignment Policies
It is the responsibility of the student to schedule a time with the instructor to take make-up exams before the next grading period.

11 Grading and Assignment Policies
Late work may be accepted at the discretion of the instructor. It is imperative that students have all work ready to hand in when the assignment is collected, as the instructor may choose not to accept it after that time.

12 Grading and Assignment Policies
I do not “bump” grades at the end of the semester. I drop your lowest quiz grade and there are various (small) extra credit opportunities each semester. This means that all grades that are borderline will remain borderline at the end of the semester, i.e. a 79% will not be “bumped” to an 80%, nor will an 89% be “bumped” to a 90%.

13 Cheating / Plagiarism Cheating and plagiarism will be severely punished if discovered by the instructor. Please refer to the Lancer Life under the heading “Cheating” for specific disciplinary actions that can, and will, be carried out by the instructor. The instructor maintains a no-tolerance attitude toward any matters concerned with both cheating and plagiarism.
