Using the Delivery of Education to Diminish Barriers to Diabetes Treatment Dave Joffe, BSPharm, CDE, FACA Amanda Laurenzo, PharmD Candidate Irene Lelekis, PharmD Candidate Shannon Hart, PharmD Candidate Leigh Anne Bowen, PharmD Candidate Rebecca Anderson, PharmD Candidate Type 1 Diabetes and Psychoeducation Part 1 of 3

Objectives 1. Discuss the information transfer 2. Educate about the emotional impact to children and parents 3. Explain the support of psychotherapeutic treatment 4. Provide information on methods for self-help 5. Communicate the effect of diabetes on the family unit

Use Open and Honest Communication Encourage the child to tell you what he/she already knows about diabetes Dispel any myths or ill-conceived ideas about diabetes: – –Kids do not do anything wrong to get diabetes – –You can not catch diabetes from another person – –Diabetes is not going to just “go away” – –Kids with diabetes can do anything that kids without diabetes can do   i.e., attending parties, outings, sleepovers

What Happens When You Have Untreated Diabetes? You may feel really thirsty, like you ca not get enough to drink You may need to go to the bathroom more often, & you might accidentally wet the bed You may feel too tired to play or participate in your normal activities You may feel hungry & eat more than usual You could lose too much weight without trying

What Causes Diabetes? Diabetes is a disease that affects how your body uses the fuel (glucose) from the food you eat Normally when you eat, glucose from the food gets into your bloodstream – –A hormone called insulin is released from an organ in your body called the pancreas – –Insulin helps the glucose get into the body's cells, & your body gets the energy it needs

What Causes Diabetes? If you have Type 1 diabetes your body can not make insulin The glucose can not get into your body’s cells for energy, so your blood sugar level gets too high – –Too much sugar in your blood makes you sick if you don't get treatment

What Causes Diabetes? Just like your body, a car needs fuel (gas) for energy to run The car also needs a way to get that fuel from the gas tank to the engine – –A car’s fuel pump can move the gas from the tank to the engine Just like the car’s fuel pump, insulin gets the body’s fuel, glucose, into the cells for the body’s energy!

Treating Type 1 Diabetes You can help yourself stay healthy by: – –Taking insulin injections – –Eating a healthy diet – –Being active by playing & getting exercise – –Checking blood sugar levels

Treating Type 1 Diabetes Taking insulin injections: – –There are different types of insulin:   Depending on what you need some are given once or twice daily & some are given just before you eat – –Injections may sound scary at first, but your parents can help you – –You will see that the needles are so small that the injections do not really hurt – –You can take charge & tell your parents where on your body you prefer your insulin injections – –Your doctor may give you an insulin pump that requires only 1 injection about every 3 days

Treating Type 1 Diabetes Eating a healthy diet – –Know that carbohydrates, such as bread, pasta & sugary treats, will make your blood sugar levels go higher Being active by playing & getting exercise – –Kids with diabetes can & should play, just like other kids – –Playing & having fun makes you feel good! – –Physical activity can help prevent health problems now & later in life

Treating Type 1 Diabetes Checking blood sugar levels – –Checking your blood sugar levels is the only way to see how well your insulin injections & healthy diet are working to keep your blood sugar levels in a healthy range – –Your parents can help you use a blood glucose monitor to check your blood sugar   You can keep a diary of your blood sugar levels & what you eat every day—that’s easy!
