1 Scenario 2

2 Read! Read the introduction to scenario 2. What will we be studying?

3 Diabetes There are 2 types: Type 1 Type 2
Deals with the amount of sugar in the blood

4 Does anyone know of someone who has diabetes?

5 Type 1 Diabetes Usually develops in children and teenagers, but can develop at any age Often called “juvenile diabetes” Often genetic

6 Type 1 Diabetes: How it Works…..
The body’s immune system attacks part of its own pancreas The body targets the insulin-producing cells and destroy them These cells are called “islets” Sense the glucose in the blood “Key” to allowing glucose to enter the cells and use it for energy

7 No islets  no insulin  glucose cannot get into the cells  cells “starve”

8 What happens next? If the glucose builds up too much, it can lead to
Eye damage Kidney damage Heart damage Coma Death

9 Treatment Insulin Therapy Daily insulin injections Insulin Pump
The amount of insulin your body needs depends on food, exercise, stress, emotions, and general health

10 To Sum it Up….

11 Type 2 Diabetes Often called “adult onset” Caused as a result of being overweight or being pregnant

12 Main Cause The people with this type may be able to produce their own insulin but… It may not be enough The cells may have become insulin resistant Means that the “key” to open the cell to sugar no longer works This causes sugar/glucose to build up in the bloodstream

13 Treatment Focused on diet and exercise
Sometimes insulin injections are necessary The good news: After you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, there is a chance that your condition can be reversed and cured Weight loss Giving birth (in the case of gestational diabetes)

14 To Sum it Up

15 Signs and Symptoms Common symptoms of diabetes: Urinating often
Feeling very thirsty Feeling very hungry - even though you are eating Extreme fatigue Blurry vision Cuts/bruises that are slow to heal Weight loss - even though you are eating more (type 1) Tingling, pain, or numbness in the hands/feet (type 2)

16 Complications of Having Diabetes

17 Type 2 Diabetes Epidemic
In the past few years, there has been a huge increase in type 2 diabetes as a result of unhealthy lifestyle choices and obesity
