2 Introduction to Type 1 Diabetes ★ Blood glucose levels are above normal ★ The body doesn’t make enough insulin ★ Can’t use its own insulin as well as it should ★ Causes sugar build up in blood ★ Usually diagnosed in children and young adults

4 Who It Affects ★ Usually diagnosed in children and young adults ★ 13,000 children are diagnosed every year in the US ★ 1 million people deal with it every day ★ most commonly affected in canada, the USA and Australia

5 Causes/ Risk Factors ★ Autoimmune, genetic, and environmental factors ★ An unknown virus can attack the immune system against the cells in the pancreas which make the body’s insulin ★ Virus attacks in people who are genetically prone to the disease

6 Signs and Symptoms ★ Urinates a lot - the body tries to get rid of the glucose in the blood stream ★ More thirsty than usual - the body needs to make up the fluid it lost from urinating ★ Loses weight or can’t gain weight - the body breaks down stored fat and muscle for “hungry” cells ★ Fatigue - the body can’t use energy from glucose like it should

7 Treatment ★ People with diabetes have to check their glucose levels to make sure they in a healthy range and inject themselves with insulin. ★ Some kids and teens use devices that make it easier and less painful to do these things ★ Doctors and scientists are still researching for a cure to diabetes ★ Making sure people with diabetes are eating properly, exercising, and keeping up with their blood sugars in essential
