Ninth Grade Academy Goals Successful transition from middle school to high school Increase the promotion rate to 10th grade Improve communication between students, parents and teachers

The Scheduling Process High School counselors visited Redding MS on February 21 st, Meredith MS on February 25 th & Waters MS on February 26 th to: – Distribute course selection materials – Present scheduling information – Discuss the transition from middle school to high school – Answer questions

Scheduling Process Counselors will return to the middle schools to review students’ course selections & answer questions: – Meredith MS: Wednesday, March 6 th – Waters MS: Thursday, March 7 th – Redding MS: Friday, March 8 th Students should bring their completed course selection sheets to school on the date of their scheduled school visit

Scheduling Process March 8 th : Parents and students will begin to view their child’s course selections in the Home Access Center March 13 th : Students will receive a copy of their course request in homeroom Students will have until Thursday March 21 st to make changes to their course request- No changes will be made after this date!

New Registrants Students who are not enrolled at Meredith, Redding, or Waters MS, must register in order to attend AHS HS Counselors will visit MOT Charter on March 11 th & St. Anne’s on March 21 st to distribute course selection information and registration documents. We encourage families to “pre-register” by April 12 th to ensure your child receives his/her requested classes.

Student Success Plans (SSP) The SSP is a tool designed to help students identify and consider post-secondary career & education goals and develop a plan to pursue those goals DE Department of Education requires all students in grades 9-12 create &/or update their SSP annually in order to graduate Starting in 8 th grade, students are provided access to the website each school year Parents/Guardians must review their student’s plan each year to meet the graduation requirement

Senior Project Link between the experiences students have had in the classroom and any post-secondary experiences that may await you The project requirements include: an experience/event/academic research paper component, a reflection paper component, an oral presentation tying the entire project together, and a portfolio Students are expected to complete their senior project by the spring semester of their senior year in order to graduate

Promotion/Retention Requirements In order to be promoted to 10 th grade: – Students must take a full schedule in 9 th grade (8 credits) – Students must earn 5 credits: 4 of which must be English, math, science and social studies – Students who do not meet these criteria will be scheduled into appropriate courses the next year/semester

Career Pathway A planned program of sequenced or specialized courses designed to develop knowledge and skills in a particular career area 3 credits in a Career Pathway are required for graduation The Career Pathway is not a life- long career choice and may not necessarily be something a student would like to pursue following graduation from high school A Brief Video about the AHS

Block Scheduling Students will have four 90-minute periods per semester. Each period is a “block” All courses except Integrated Math I, Chorus, Orchestra and Band will be offered in a 90 minute block period for one semester Integrated Math I will be offered all year within a block Chorus, Orchestra and Band will be offered all year, every other day Students enrolled in Chorus, Orchestra or Band must take Health & Physical Education
