Class of 2023

2 High School Schedule School begins at 7:30 a.m.
School ends at 2:18 p.m. Scheduling A Day/B Day 4 periods a day (classes are approximately 80 minutes long) Most 9th grade courses meet every other day

3 Graduation Requirements
26 Credits Pass state testing in Algebra 1, Biology, Government, and English 10 40 Hours of Service Learning

4 Graduation Requirements: Core Academic Classes
English: 4 credits English 9 English 10 English 11 English 12 Social Studies: 3 Credits US History US Government World History Mathematics: 4 Years Algebra I Geometry 2 Additional Math Electives Science: 3 Credits Biology 2 Additional science electives

5 Graduation Requirements Electives
Physical Education/Health: 1.5 Credits Fitness for Life Health Education Physical Education Elective Basic Technology: 1 Credits Choose four classes from a list of 6 quarter classes Or Principles of Engineering (Project Lead the Way students) Fine Arts: 1 Credit Music, Art, Dance, and Theater Electives: 8.5 Credits Including Completer program along with general electives

College Completer (University System of Maryland) – requires two years of the same World & Classical Language Spanish American Sign Language French Chinese Career Completer- requirements listed in the back of the AACPS High School Program of Study (available online) Homeland Security Food & Beverage Mgmt. 7 Dual Completer Program
Many Students complete both college and career completers and are considered dual complters. For example: Desired Career Dual Completer Program Elementary Education (Teacher) College Completer & Early Childhood Completer Professional Chef College Completer & Food and Beverage Management (ProStart) Completer Government/Homeland Security College Completer & Homeland Security Completer Engineer/Architect College Completer & Project Lead the Way Completer

8 Graduation Requirements- Service Learning
Grade/Course Service Hours Earned 5th Grade 5 Hours 6th-8th Grade 30 Hours (10 per grade) US Government 10 Hours Health Education English 11 10th Grade (Science) Total Hours 75 Hours

9 COURSE SELECTION academic (math, science, English, social studies) and language courses  already been recommended by your teachers. Global Citizenship  required semester elective for all 9th grade students You will get to choose additional electives but remember that Technology, Fine Arts, and PE electives are required for graduation. Other electives are also available for you to explore based on your interests

10 What if I disagree with a class recommendation?
If you disagree with a recommendation you can circle the alternate request in pen and sign on the course selection sheet indicating you understand and are waiving the teacher’s recommendation. A waiver indicates that you are assuming the responsibility of your child’s success in the course.

12 Choose Your PE Electives
Physical Education Electives Fitness for Life 1 (Required) Football Strength & Conditioning Team Sports Soccer Basketball Dance Stretch for Wellness Fitness for Life is a required graduation course. Students will need to also complete 1 additional PE elective to meet graduation requirements.

Foundations of Art (FOA)- take first Studio 1 2D Drawing/Painting (FOA) Studio 1 3D Sculpt/Ceramics (FOA) Photo & Digital Drawing for Fashion Theater Dance Dance Company (Audition) Music Band Orchestra Percussion Chorus 1 Piano & Keyboarding 1 Guitar Music Technology Choose Your Fine Arts Electives Foundations of Art is the required course before you can take 2D, 3D, or Photography. You may take dance or music courses all year. If you take and pass 2 fine arts courses in 9th grade, you will have satisfied your arts graduation requirement.

21 Getting Promoted to 10th Grade
You must earn 6 credits to move up to 10th grade.   3 of the 6 credits must be academic credits. You are responsible for making up the credit during evening or summer school.

22 Keys to success in 9th grade
Attend school regularly Be prepared to study and do homework daily Complete a day homework on a day and b day homework on b day Use an agenda book and be organized Ask for help and participate in class—Talk with your teachers! Attend extra help sessions Get involved in school and community activities

23 Course Selection Timeline
January 22/23 Meade High Counselors meet with Middle School Students. February 6th  All scheduling forms need to be signed by parents and returned to your Middle School Teacher
