Coordinating Conjunctions Using FANBOYS to join independent clauses to form compound sentences

Let's get some definitions out of the way... Independent clause A group of words that contains a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought. Can stand alone as a sentence. For example... Beyoncé sings very well. She is a successful musician.

And another definition... Compound sentence A sentence which combines two independent clauses. There are two ways to form a compound sentence: 1. Using a semicolon: Beyoncé sings very well; she is a successful musician. 2. Using a comma and a coordinating conjunction: Beyoncé sings very well, and she is a successful musician.

What's a coordinating conjunction? Coordinating conjunction A linking word used to combine two independent clauses to form a compound sentence. So which words are coordinating conjunctions?

FANBOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are 7 coordinating conjunctions. You can remember them by thinking about FANBOYS! F = for A = and N = nor B = but O = or Y = yet S = so

How do I use FANBOYS!?!?!?! Use a comma + FANBOYS in the middle of two independent clauses to make a compound sentence. It was snowing outside, but the loyal Bears fan took his shirt off anyway. Beyoncé is beautiful and famous, so she has lots of fan boys. USING FANBOYS IS FUN, SO USE THEM EVERYDAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
