5 What is a sentence? Independent Clause A sentence is a group of words that contains a complete thought; it starts with a capital letter and has an end mark. It is also called an independent clause because it has a subject and verb and can stand alone.

6 What is a sentence? Independent Clause Example: I jumped to dunk the basketball. Fragment: the basketball. A simple sentence = one thought or one independent clause.
