2  A simple sentence is an independent clause.  It is a group of words having a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.  Example: The boys swam in the lake. ________________ Subject + verb

3  A simple sentence can have one or more compound part joined by a coordinating conjunction (and, but, or, neither…or, either…..or).  Example: The boys and their friends swam in the lake  Example: The students studied hard and passed the test. _______ ____________ ________ Subject + subject + verb _________________________ ____________ Subject + verb + verb

4  A simple sentence can have more than one subject AND more than one verb but only if the subjects are acting as a group.  Example: Sarah and Katy studied hard for the test and received hundreds.  Sarah and Katy are both studying and both receiving hundreds. __________________________ _____________ Subject + subject + verb + verb

5  A compound sentence is a combination of two or more simple sentences joined by a coordinating conjunction (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so) and a comma.  *help remember coordinating conjunctions with FANBOYS  Example: The dogs barked, and the cat meowed. _______________ ____ ___________

6  Example: Sarah and Katy studied hard for the test and received hundreds.  Example: The dogs barked, and the cat meowed.

7 1.Place a comma after the opening independent clause and before the conjunction. Example: The dogs barked, and the cat meowed. 2.The conjunction and comma may be omitted and a semicolon used in its place to separate the independent clause. Example: The dogs barked; the cats meowed.

8 1. Emily studies every afternoon. 2. Will played football, and Anna went shopping. 3. Austin and Dan play football every afternoon. 4. Charlotte goes to the library and studies everyday. 5. Nemo swam out to sea, so Marlin chased after him.

9 6. Mrs. Wilcox enjoys teaching writing. 7. Mrs. Wilcox wants her students to succeed. 8. Mrs. Wilcox enjoys teaching writing, and she wants her students to succeed. 9. Some students like to study in the mornings. 10. Sam was tired of studying, so he went to talk to his friends instead. 11. The class kept talking and had to sit in assigned seats for the rest of the year. 12. Dori and Marlin swim through the trench, get stung by jelly fish, and meet some sea turtles.
