2 What is a clause? A clause is a group of words that contains both a subject and a verb.

3 Two Types of Clauses: 1. An independent clause expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. Also known as a main clause. Example: We all want bargains.

4 2. A dependent clause may contain a subject and a verb, but it does not express a complete thought. It cannot stand alone as a sentence. Also known as a subordinate clause. Example: when we buy things Two Types of Clauses:

9 Simple Sentences Contain ONE clause Can you guess what kind of clause it contains? INDEPENDENT! Has 1 subject & 1 pred.

10 Compound Sentences Contain two or more INDEPENDENT clauses Joined together either with:  A semicolon I love pizza; my favorite is pepperoni.  A comma with a coordinating conjunction I love pizza, and my favorite is pepperoni.

11 Semicolons ; Can only be used to join independent clauses Incorrect: The field trip to the park should be fun we are all going to bring a game to play. Correct: The field trip to the park should be fun; we are all going to bring a game to play.

12 Coordinating Conjunctions Join two independent clauses Must be paired with a comma FANBOYS:  for  and  nor  but  or  yet  so

13 Remember clauses? Whenever I get home. The dog barked. After you finish your homework. You need to wash the dishes.

15 Complex Sentences Contains 1 or more dependent clauses Contains ONE and only ONE independent clause The dependent clauses can be in the beginning, middle, or end of your sentence.

16 Dependent Clause Markers If you are unsure about whether or not a clause is dependent, use these words that signal the start of a dependent clause. After Although Who Which When Until Where So that Since Where When Why Dependent clauses answer these questions
