3 There are 3 Kinds of Sentences First you need to know that groups of words used to make sentences are called phrases or clauses … I didn’t say Santa Claus this is a very different kind of clause

5 Why would a sentence be called an independent clause? What does the word independent mean?

6 Independent Clause a complete SENTENCE An Independent Clause is a group of words that can stand alone - a complete SENTENCE! Josey eats a lot of ice cream!

7 Josey eats ice cream, but John eats cookies. Josey eats ice cream. John eats cookies.

8 When you combine two sentences (independent clauses) you MUST use either… OR

9 Do you remember what conjunctions are? F – For A – And N – Nor B – But O – Or Y – Yet S – So Here’s a great way to remember!

10 After we studied for the test. Is this a sentence (an independent clause)? No, because it isn’t a complete thought… this is a Dependent Clause
