Welcome to Chiles AP ACCEL & ACCEL Plus! Tuesday, February 22, 2011 6:00 PM – Chiles High Auditorium Nancy Watson WE have two strands of our AP ACCEL program. The AP ACCEL and ACCEL Plus provide qualifying students with a program of study the prepares them to take an AP class in their first or second year at Chiles. The strand we call AP ACCEL allows students to take World History Honors/ACCEL their freshman year. This allows them to take an AP Course in the 10th grade. The World History ACCEL Honors course uses AP strategies and writing instruction so that they will begin the 10th grade AP course they choose, having become familiar with the structure of AP. Our strand, called ACCEL Plus, allows students to take an AP course their 9th grade year--AP World History and/or Pre - AP Biology w/ chemistry, and then they may take additional AP courses their 10th grade year, if they so choose. Qualifications for AP ACCEL and ACCEL PLus—(refer to slides) Qualifying may occur after the 2010 FCAT scores and final GPAs are out in the summer. Download the AP Application. Welcome to Chiles Advanced Placement Program! Tuesday, February 22, 2011 6:00 PM – Chiles High Auditorium John Barnhill Mrs. Jan Dunlap

AP and College Success AP Students are much more likely to graduate from college in 4 years or less. AP math and science students are much more likely to major in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics Jan Dunlap Brief overview of the AP Program and the advantages of them-–students are challenged by the rigors of the course, but the courses are not impossible for high school students. Colleges and universities love to see AP courses on a student’s transcript because they know what it means. Number of AP courses offered—refer to the AP ACCEL brochure for the list of all courses offered. Mention that passing the exam is good, but a student’s grade in the class is based on assignments, tests, etc. rather than the score they make in May on the national exam. (5-7 min.) We are fortunate that we have many wonderful programs in Leon County for students. So what is the advantage of AP at Chiles High School? Students can choose one or more AP courses based on that student’s strengths and interests rather than having a set curriculum imposed upon them. Our AP teachers receive extra training, and we are fortunate that we have a continuity in our AP faculty, and they love what they’re doing. Because we recognized that some entering freshmen were ready for more challenges than the standard 9th grade curriculum provided, we initiated the AP ACCEL program in 2001 and last year, we created an even more challenging strand to this ACCEL program called ACCEL Plus. Introduce Jan.
