15 WHAT IS THE PSAT PRELIMINARY SAT TEST  IT IS A PRACTICE SAT GIVEN BY THE COLLEGEBOARD  IT IS A STANDARDIZED TEST  IT GIVES STUDENTS VALUABLE INFORMATION ABOUT CRITICAL READING, MATH, WRITING  GIVEN ONCE A YEAR IN OCTOBER  STATE OF GEORGIA PAYS FOR ALL 10 TH GRADERS TO TAKE. 9 TH OR 11 TH GRADERS CAN PAY TO TAKE THE TEST AS WELL  ALSO SERVES AS A QUALIFYING TEST FOR THE NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLARSHIP

16 HOW TO INTERPRET THE SCORES MEASURES STUDENTS ON THREE AREAS  Critical Reading  Math  Writing EACH AREA HAS A SCORE RANGING FROM 20- 80 UNDERNEATH THE SCORE, IT WILL TELL YOU HOW YOU COMPARE WITH OTHERS IN THE NATION WHO HAVE TAKEN THE TEST THE THREE SCORE TOTAL IS CALLED THE SELECTION INDEX AND RANGES FROM 60-240

18 AP POTENTIAL ADVANCED PLACEMENT (AP) IS ANOTHER COLLEGEBOARD PROGRAM AP POTENTIAL USES PSAT SCORES TO DETERMINE THE LIKELYHOOD OF SUCCESS (SCORING A 3 OR HIGHER) ON AN AP EXAM. YOU MAY HAVE RECEIVED A LETTER INDICATING FUTURE SUCCESS THIS IS NOT THE ONLY METHOD TO DETERMINE SUCCESS

20 Advanced Placement (AP) AP Classes are available at White County High School Students will take an AP Exam at the End of the Class The AP exams are scored 1-5 Students who earn a 3, 4, or 5 may get college credit College credit awarded varies from college to college Research indicates that students who take AP courses in high school perform better in college

23 Dual Enrollment High School students can take courses at an eligible college while still enrolled as a high school student Accel Program – most common Move On When Ready Hope Grant Articulation Residential Programs

24 ACCEL Move on When Ready Eligible Students in grades 9-12 (Many colleges will only take 11-12 th graders) Must apply and be accepted by the college Full-time or part-time Courses on Accel list On the college campus or at High School Earn credit at both the high school and college Hours attempted will not count against HOPE Hours  Eligible Students in grades 11-12  Must apply and be accepted by the college  Full-time ONLY (min 12 hours)  If you drop one course you have to drop them all  Courses on the approved list  On the college campus  Earn credit at both the high school and college  Hours will not count against HOPE Hours Accel vs. MOWR

25 Hope Grant Eligible Students in grades 9-12 (Many colleges will only take 11-12 th graders) Must apply and be accepted by the college Full-time or part-time Courses on Dual Enrollment Directory On the college campus Simultaneously earn high school credit toward their high school diploma and certificate/diploma program Earn credit at both the high school and college Hours attempted will not count against HOPE Hours

26 ACCEL VS. HOPE GRANT Accel is for core courses (Math, Science, English, Social Studies, Foreign Language) Hope Grant is for Technical Certificate or Diploma Program courses (Welding, Mechanics, Engineering, etc.)

27 Articulation Any student in grades 9-12 at a high school that has an articulation agreement with a local college can participate. – No college admission required before graduation – Courses within articulation agreements are eligible – Take classes on high school campus – Credit awarded at the college level is contingent upon passing the college’s qualifying exam – No cost – HOPE limits are not affected

29 Joint Enrollment Joint enrollment is NOT a dual enrollment program – Must apply and be accepted to the college – Part-time status is required at the college – Student can take ANY course that the college offers – Credit is ONLY earned at the college and not transferred back to the high school – Can be paid for by the HOPE grant/scholarship or by the student/parents – Courses taken and paid for by HOPE grant/scholarship do count towards HOPE hours

30 Requirements to Participate In an eligible grade 9-12 depending on program Been reported as enrolled in a public high school the preceding October and March Applied and been accepted by a post-secondary institution Meet requirements set by WCHS Complete and submit the state Accel application Be in good standing as a student Maturity is an important factor to consider Take only courses from the approved list Meet with counselor to schedule courses and receive advisement

31 White County Requirements April 1 deadline to apply for Fall and Nov. 1 for Spring SAT/ACT/ASSET  SAT  480 CR; 440 Math; combined 970  ACT  20 English; 18 Math; Composite 21  ASSET (for technical college only)  Reading 42; Writing 41; Math 32; Algebra 42 Core GPA 3.0 Attend a Dual Enrollment Workshop Meet with counselor and sign all advisement forms.
