This has led to a number of questions from our Sheridan students. The following document is intended to help you understand these new designations, learn what is required to obtain those designations, and the human resources programs that Continuing and Professional Studies offers that will prepare you. HRPA belonged to the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations (CCHRA) until June 30, The CCHRA was the governing body of the HRPA and administered the National Knowledge Exam (NKE). They had oversight of the Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation in Ontario. As of June 30, 2014, HRPA began operating independently so that they could focus their resources and energies in areas that were the highest priority to their members. One area of focus was the restructuring of the human resources designations. HRPA changed the designations on October 29, What new designations are there? The Certified Human Resources Professional (CHRP) designation still exists; however, it is now considered an entry-level designation. Two new designations have been added: -Certified Human Resources Leader (CHRL) – Professional-Level (replaced the previous CHRP) -Certified Human Resources Executive (CHRE) – Executive-Level (replaced the Senior Human Resources Professional (SHRP) designation). sheridancollege.ca What are the requirements to obtain your CHRP? The CHRP is the entry-level designation for the HR profession in Ontario (see chart below). To obtain your CHRP, you must have membership in good standing with HRPA, complete the 9 required courses to obtain a Human Resources Certificate, and complete the knowledge exam. Continuing and Professional Studies offers the Human Resources Management Certificate program which includes the nine required courses or prescribed coursework by HRPA. You do not need to have a university degree to obtain your CHRP. Once you achieve your Human Resources Management Certificate, you need to write and pass the Comprehensive Knowledge Exam (CKE) (formerly the National Knowledge Exam or NKE) with HRPA. sheridancollege.ca HRPA DESIGNATIONS CHRP- Timeline October 29, January 31, 2016 February 1, June 30, 2016 As of July 1, 2016  Member in good standing  9 courses/Alternate Route  CKE (or CKE 1 or CKE 2, both available Nov. 2015) or valid NKE  Member in good standing  9 courses/Alternate Route  CKE or CKE 1 or CKE 2 or valid NKE  Job Ready Program  Member in good standing  9 courses/Alternate Route  CKE or CKE 1 or CKE 2 or valid NKE  Job Ready Program  Jurisprudence 1 As of February 2016, applicants seeking the CHRP designation will also be required to successfully complete a job ready program. And, as of July 2016, a prescribed HR law exam must also be successfully completed for earning the CHRP designation. sheridancollege.ca HRPA DESIGNATIONS CHRP- Career Paths What are the common or typical jobs for CHRP designate holders? CHRP holders normally hold roles that are mostly administrative in nature, such as a contributing role in a larger HR function, or a sole HR practitioner in a small HR function. You would have responsibilities such as supporting HR initiatives, executing tasks passed down from management, and operating at the tactical and transactional levels. Typical job titles include: HR Assistant, Staffing Coordinator, HR Clerk and HR Coordinator.

sheridancollege.ca What are the requirements to obtain your CHRL? The CHRL is the professional-level designation for the HR profession in Ontario. To obtain your CHRL, you must have membership in good standing with HRPA, complete a university degree from a recognized degree-granting institution, and at least 3 years of professional-level HR experience. Up until October 1, 2020, you can pursue the Human Resources Management Certificate program at Sheridan's Continuing and Professional Studies as it meets the prescribed coursework required to obtain your CHRL. You will also need to pass the CKE with HRPA. There are a variety of incremental changes that will occur over the next few years with the CHRL designation. It is recommended that you review the HRPA website on an ongoing basis to stay current.Human Resources Management Certificate program What happens to the HR education requirement to obtain your CHRL after October 1, 2020? HRPA has only indicated that there will be an updated academic requirement. Details of what that exactly entails will be shared by HRPA closer to the date of the change. CHRL holders can be found in either specialist or generalist positions with responsibilities such as managing projects, programs, and initiatives, implementing plans passed down by senior management, and delegating tasks to entry-level staff. Typical job titles include: Director of HR, HR Manager, HR Generalist, HR Business Partner and HR Specialist.
