8. 8 An Associate degree is obtained after a prescribed two year course of study. Upon completion, credits can be transferred toward a bachelor's. A Bachelor's degree program is considered the standard undergraduate degree and normally takes four years to complete. A Master's degree refers to a specialized graduate or postgraduate program following completion of your bachelor's. Usually lasting 1-3 years, a master's degree will help refine your skills in your chosen subject. A Doctorate degree is the highest recognized degree level and gives its holder recognition as an expert in the studied subject. Requiring two or more years of additional studies, a doctorate degree can only be earned after successfully completing a graduate program.

9. 9 Certification is the fastest way to document the completion of a program of study. A certificate states that you have meets requirements of established by the professional association or government agency to demonstrate mastery. Ex: Certified Dental Assistant, Certified Laboratory Technician

10. Registration is required in some health careers. It is administered by a regulatory body that administers examinations & maintains a list (registry) of “qualified” personnel in a particular area. Ex: Registered Dietician, Registered Respiratory Therapist

11. 11 Licensure is a non-voluntary process by which an agency of government regulates a profession. One must complete an approved educational program, pass a state board test & must maintain certain standards. Ex: Physician, Nurse, Physical Therapist Licensing is always based on the action of a legislative body. Once a licensing law has been passed it becomes illegal for anyone to engage in that occupation unless he or she has a license. The health care professions are typically licensed at the state and/or local level, but not usually at the federal level.

12. Continuing Education Units are required to renew licenses or maintain certification or registration in many states. (CEU’s) Accreditation ensures that the program of study meets established quality competency standards by an outside agency such as a national board

Licensed health care professionals must practice their profession according to the guidelines and limitations set by the state in which they are licensed. Registration means that a health care professional has graduated from an accredited school and has passed a standardized national exam administered by a nongovernmental agency, usually a professional organization. Certification, which is awarded by professional organizations, is generally optional but often leads to more and better job opportunities and higher pay.
