ROME AND THE ROMAN EMPIRE By Mathis

Who Founded Rome ? A group of shepherds, Latins and Sabiens came together and fortified a hill they called “Capitole” towards the year 750 B.C.E. The Etruscans later conquered the hill and developed the city later to be called Rome.

The Romans Invade Britain Julius Caesar successfully conquered Gaul (modern day France) and led his army across the sea to Britannia (modern day Britain). The people living in Britannia was a group called the Celts. The Celts resisted the Roman army’s invasions, Julius Caesar had failed. Nearly 100 years later, Emperor Claudius led his armies to Britannia and definitely crushed the Celts.

Why was the Roman Empire Important? Rome’s empire was colossal and most powerful in the Ancient World. The Roman empire stretched from Europe to the Middle East: Portugal to Jordan, England to North Africa. It dominated the Mediterranean area.

What Did The Romans Give Us ? The Romans gave us fine examples of Architecture; Temples, Aqueducts, baths, paved road ways to travel, numerals, the Latin language, the calendar and a unified religion: Christianity.

Roman Gods These are the names of famous Roman gods: Venus is the goddess of Love Neptune is the god of Water Mars is the god of War Jupiter is the god of the Sky Mithras is the goddess of Light The planets in our Solar System are named after roman gods.

Famous Romans Here are the names of famous roman generals and emperors: Julius Caesar B.C.E. Consul, military leader, Julius Caesar is the conqueror of Gaul. He is named dictator of life. He was assassinated in 44 B.C.E Hadrian A.D. he succeeds Trajan, his adopted father. He did voyages all over his empire. He baptized many buildings including his wall in northern England. Octavian 63 B.C.E-14 A.D. he is Caesar's adopted son and nephew. In 27 B.C.E he becomes the first emperor and is given the name of Augustus.

Roman Entertainment The Romans entertained themselves in amphitheatres (like the coliseum in Rome). In these arenas, they held gladiator fights, chariot racing, and sometimes gruesome sports and on special occasions: people being eaten by lions.

Roman soldiers The Romans soldiers were the most efficient, trained and disciplined killing machines of the Ancient World. The roman army (Legions, up to 5000 men) was organized in groups: maniples (later cohorts) and centuries. A cohort = 480 men or 6 centuries, a century = 80 men
