THE HOW-TO GUIDE FOR FORECASTING VERSION 2015 So you’re going to be a Junior

Forecasting Course selections for next school year Should complete your:  Graduation Requirements  Focused Program Requirements Should meet requirements for:  OSAA  NHS  Chancellor’s Diploma/Honors Program Should prepare you for your:  Post-High School plans

If You’re Involved In: OSAA Athletics or Activity  Eligibility  Must pass 5 classes from previous semester  Must be enrolled in 5 classes at Glencoe  Must have at least 9.5 credits at start of Junior year  2.0 GPA if any Fs National Honors Society and Honors Program  Must be enrolled in 6 classes

Things to Consider Chancellors Diploma:  Aligns with common 4-year University requirements  16 academic units – at least one extra!  3.4 GPA by end of senior year  2 credits of World Languages  26 total credits

Things to Consider Honors Program  Make sure you forecast for the classes you need!  Must be enrolled in 6 classes  8 honors-eligible courses (see worksheet in counseling center)  3 years of same World Language  3.5 GPA THROUGH senior year  No Pass/fail on any honors eligible courses  26 total credits Valedictorian or Saluditorian Must earn Honors Diploma No pass/fail AT ALL Vals: 4.0 GPA Sals: 3.98 GPA (THROUGH senior year)

Planning for After High School Be realistic with your goals  Consider your GPA, career plans, work ethic  What do you need to do for that plan?  Meet with your counselor or Mrs. Seeborg “Look good on paper”  Whether you’re getting a job or getting into college, make a good impression with class choices and grades!

Planning for After High School Military:  Must have a standard diploma  Modified diploma and/or GED will not work 2-year college:  Required Placement Tests in Reading, Writing and Math  Some programs require certain test scores to enroll  Make sure to take classes this year to help with these skills  Extra core-area classes  Electives that will help you in these areas

Things to Consider 4-Year College Requirements  Aim for a 3.0+ GPA  Oregon universities are  Cs or better in all core classes  Ds are not accepted  2 credits of the same World Language  Extra math and science beyond HS requirements Be college-ready!

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER… PICKING YOUR CLASSES

Junior Requirements Language Arts:  1.0 credit (full-year) Math:  1.0 credit (full-year) Science:  1.0 credit (full-year) Social Studies:  1.0 credit (full-year)

Junior Requirements Rest of schedule is electives:  Up to 4.0 credits  Full-year or semester  Can include:  Early release/late arrival  Honors Tutorial (no credit)/Study hall (no credit)  AVID Be realistic – consider your overall load  Multiple Honors/AP classes?  Extracurricular activities or a job?

Reminders for Graduation (At least) 24 credits to graduate!  Many different diplomas:  Modified, Standard, Chancellor’s, Honors Ask yourself: Do I need Credit Recovery?  Did you fail a class in grade 9 or so far in 10 th ?  You must now get counselor approval for credit recovery during 11 th  Seniors get priority!  You can also do summer school, which will get you on track sooner State Testing:  Must pass SBAC or alternatives in Reading, Writing and Math  Alternatives include: work samples, scores from PSAT, ACT, SAT, AP, etc.

Reminders Math level will be recommended by current teacher AP Science Courses  Chemistry and Environmental Science available  Biology and Physics available Spanish for Spanish Speakers  For students who speak Spanish at home, but may struggle with Spanish reading and writing skills  Work on reading and writing skills with other heritage speakers  Can take the STAMP (proficiency) test and earn additional Spanish credits  Not for students who only speak Spanish at a beginning level

Reminders Off-campus options available, however they can impact your schedule at GHS greatly  Japanese (Century)  American Sign Language/Auto Tech (Hilhi)  Fire Science (Liberty)  Please only forecast for these if you are EXTREMELY committed Fire Science  At Liberty HS  Both A and B days  Requires an Application with essay, transcript and attendance report  Information session happening TOMORROW: Wednesday, March 4 th at 1pm  Sign up by Wednesday morning in the counseling center to get a pass!

Glencoe Focused Programs See the Glencoe Course Guide to find out what Focused Program classes are REQUIRED during 11 th grade  Website is listed on the top of your forecasting form!  Make sure you forecast correctly!

Example 11 th Grade Focused Program Courses Arts & Communication  Choir, Band, Guitar,  Journalism/Newspaper, Drama, Tech Theater, Speech/Forensics  Graphic Design, Cartooning, Art, Business & Management  Accounting, Personal Finance  Marketing, Marketing Lab  Computer Keyboarding, Computer Applications Engineering  Principles of Engineering, Digital Electronics  Programming 1, AP Computer Science

Example 11 th Grade Focused Program Courses Health Services  Health Services 1, Health Services 2  Health Services 2 should be taken first, or both at same time Human Services  Child Services 1 Manufacturing & Design  Welding, Woodshop  Drafting, Architectural Drafting

Forecasting Sheet Language Arts: 4.0 credits total for graduation Science: 3.0 credits total for graduation Social Studies: 3.0 credits total for graduation

Forecasting Sheet Math: 3.0 credits total for graduation Math Recs: You must get a signature from your current math teacher!

Forecasting Sheet Electives: 5.0 credits total for graduation  Fill out ALL elective options and ALL alternates in order of preference  Try to add all your credits up to 8!  You have 4.0 from required classes  Choose wisely!  It is likely you will get these!  The classes you get you will not be able to change once the school year starts!  REMEMBER: Junior-level Focused Program courses, AVID, Seminary, Honors Tutorial/Study Hall (if needed)

Forecasting Sheet Neither Late Start nor Early Release are guaranteed – if there is a class you need or want, and it is offered 4 th period, plan to have a 4 th period class. Must have parent signatures for early release or late start Athletic Release for Varsity-level athletes ONLY  If you have not already been on Varsity for your sport, you cannot select this option

Forecasting Sheet Remember:  Parent Signature!  Due:  Thursday, March 5 th (If you have English on an A day)  Friday, March 6 th (If you have English on a B day) REQUIRED PARENT SIGNATURE _____________________________________ DATE ___________

Reminders Schedule Changes:  A “WF” will be your grade for any courses you drop once the school year starts!  Don’t overwhelm yourself – be realistic about what you take!  Will not occur just because you changed your mind on what electives you want to take! If you want to look at the Purple Packet you completed with your counselor (or white packet, if you’re AVID), it will be available in the counseling center to look at (but not take)
