Social Media 101 How to use it for the benefit of Rotary! Created by: Marc Durocher

What is Social Media? Social media refers to the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks Its the Word of mouth of the current times but a million times more powerful and also dangerous.

Top Social Media Sites Facebook million users a month Twitter million users a month Linked In million users a month Pinterest - 85 million users a month My space - 70 million users a month Google Plus - 65 million users a month Not directly social media - but YouTube gets over 1 billion unique visitors a month FB is bigger than the next 5 combined!!!

You Tube Great resource for posting videos Can be used to learn more about Rotary for existing Rotarians Great for showing small clips to explain complex Rotary programs such as Youth Exchange Use keywords to make your video easy to find. Ie. Rotary International, Youth exchange, district 7010, the name of your club or city / area. For ex. Search for “What is Rotary International” and this will be one of the videos.

Google Plus Direct competitor to FB Established by Google, but very few people using it in comparison One great feature: Google Hangouts – Chat face-to-face – Broadcast to the world – Hold Virtual meetings Learn more:

My Space Mostly used for music / video industry to share music and video Very much on the decline since FB

Pinterest A virtual cork board Can post images and tag them Not sure how it could be used for Rotary in its current form

Linked In The Business version of Facebook There are many groups where you can share ideas and have discussions with other Rotarians

Twitter 140 character messages You can follow others and they can follow you Think of it like sending a text message to everyone who follows you. Good for sending quick bits of info, or a link to more info. Good for real time events, etc

Facebook Who is on FB? Difference between Friends, Pages, Groups – Friends - People, should not be entities

FB Groups While Pages were designed to be the official profiles for entities, such as celebrities, brands or businesses, Facebook Groups are the place for small group communication and for people to share their common interests and express their opinion. Groups allow people to come together around a common cause, issue or activity to organize, express objectives, discuss issues, post photos and share related content.Facebook Groups Can be public, or private

FB Pages Pages:Facebook Pages enable public figures, businesses, organizations and other entities to create an authentic and public presence on Facebook. Unlike your profile, Facebook Pages are visible to everyone on the internet by default. You, and every person on Facebook, can connect with these Pages by becoming a fan and then receive their updates in your News Feed and interact with them.Facebook Pages

FB Events Your page can create a FB event and then you and others can invite their friends to the event. Not a good indicator of how many people to expect as many will rsvp yes all the time and many will never rsvp Nevertheless, great way to get the word about your next event!

Growing your FB Page Use the “Build Audience” menu to invite all your friends to like your page and have other club members do the same Share the page on your personal page and ask friends to like it Success = Engagement!

Successful Pages Post regularly but make good quality posts Ask Questions to engage your fans Post information about club activities, or even information tidbits about Rotary Photos get the most attention, so post photos from every meeting / event Great example of doing it right: Rotary Club of Washago & Area - Centennial
