What are Sexually Transmitted Diseases? Merriam-Webster: Any of various diseases or infections that can be transmitted by direct sexual contact. WebMD: Commonly called STDs; are diseases that are spread by having sex with someone who has an STD. You can get a sexually transmitted disease from sexual activity that involves the mouth, anus, vagina, or penis.

The Facts:  Individuals with an STD are 2-5 times more likely to acquire HIV than uninfected individuals  Contracted through sexual activity with an infected person or through contaminated needle in drug use Symptoms:  No characteristic set of symptoms  Unexplained weight loss  Flu-like symptoms  White spots in the mouth  Yeast infection in women Treatment:  Cannot be cured  Majority die from infections associated with the disease  Anti-viral medications can slow progression from infection

Hepatitis A,A, B,B, & C Street Name: The Dragon, Hep A, Hep B, or Hep C The Breakdown: Can all be passed through sexual intercourse The Facts:  Three main types of Hepatitis that can be passed through sexual intercourse:  TYPE A= eating and drinking contaminated food/water. Also through oral sex.  TYPE B= very infectious; can spread through unprotected sex or sharing contaminated needles.  TYPE C= transmitted through sexual intercourse with someone infected with sores on genitals that may bleed. Symptoms:  Mild flu-like symptoms  Nausea  Vomiting  Diarrhea  Loss of appetite  Jaundice  Darker yellow urine Treatment:  Cannot be cured  Left untreated can lead to miscarriage and liver problems  Adequate nutrition and rest is important

Street Name: Cold Sores or Fever Blisters The Breakdown: 1 out of 5 adolescents & adults have it The Facts:  Can spread through contact of a sore or area where a sore is no longer visible  Can get genital herpes from a cold sore performed via oral sex  Majority affected are asymptomatic or have mild signs or symptoms Symptoms:  Flu-like symptoms including fever and swollen glands  Symptoms may show 1-30 days after exposure  Blisters may last 1-3 weeks Treatment:  Cannot be cured; medications are available to shorten & prevent outbreaks  Acyclovir can relieve symptoms

Genital Warts Street Name : HPV The Breakdown: Over 100 types of HPV; 30 types from sexual contact The Facts:  Is a form of HPV (Human Papilloma Virus)  Over 100 types of HPV  Soft, moist, and flesh colored and appear on the outside or inside of vagina, penis, and/or anus  Linked to several types of cancer; particularly cervical cancer Symptoms:  Can be painless, but uncomfortable due to size and itching  Warts may bleed if irritated Treatment:  Chemical treatment by freezing, burning or laser removal of warts  You can get rid of the warts, but not the virus  Warts can reappear after treatment

Street Name: Syph, Pox, or Bad Blood The Breakdown: Visible on the external genitals, vagina, or rectum The Facts:  Sores are visible on the external genitals, vagina, or rectum  Can appear on the lips or mouth  A mother may pass along to her child during childbirth 2 Stages of Symptoms:  1 st Stage= painless reddish-brown sores on sex organs, breasts, or fingers  Sores can last 1-5 weeks  Symptoms can appear 3-12 weeks after sex  2 nd Stage= hair loss, headache, fever, sore throat, rash anywhere on body  Symptoms show 1-6 months after sores heal Treatment:  If detected early enough, can be treated and cured  Antibiotics are prescribed  Left untreated can lead to heart, brain, and other organ damage; possibly death

Street Name: Trich The Breakdown: Most curable STD in young, sexually active women The Facts:  Symptoms are more common in females  The vagina is the most common site of infection  Can increase a woman’s susceptibility to HIV infection Symptoms:  Males:  No symptoms; can experience irritation while urinating and/or mild discharge  Females:  frothy, yellow-green vaginal discharge with a strong odor; can cause irritation and itching in vaginal area Treatment:  Can be treated and cured through medication

Street Name: Trich The Breakdown: Most curable STD in young, sexually active women

Gonorrhea Street Name: The Drip, Race Horse or The Whites The Breakdown: Can grow in the throat, mouth, and eyes The Facts:  Caused by bacterium growing in warm, moist areas  Also likely to grow in the throat, mouth and eyes  More than 700,000 people get infected each year Symptoms:  Women:  thick-yellow vaginal discharge.  Burning or painful urinating  Bleeding between menstruation  Men:  yellow or white discharge from penis  Burning or painful urinating  Frequent urination Treatment:  Antibiotics can help treat and cure the disease  Successful treatment is becoming difficult
