California State University, Los Angeles CSU Mandatory Early Start Program Information Session by Suzanne McEvoy, Ph.D. Adolfo Mata, EAP Coordinator

CSU Mandatory Early Start Program www.csusuccess.org The Early Start Program was initiated Summer 2012. All CSU students who require remediation in English and/or mathematics must begin the remediation process during the summer, before the freshman year. After admission, CSU campuses will inform students who are not exempt how to sign up for the Early Start Program.

CSU Early Start Program www.csusuccess.org It is strongly recommended students participate in the Early Start Program on the campus they are planning to attend in the fall. This is not mandatory, as incoming students can enroll in the Early Start Program at any CSU. Students who enroll at a campus other than the one they plan to attend fall are called “service students.” Students who enroll at the campus they plan to attend in the fall are called “destination students.”

CSU Mandatory Early Start Program www.csusuccess.org All CSU campuses are offering Early Start mathematics and English courses. Most campuses will offer on-line courses. The Early Start courses for all CSU campuses are through Extended Studies. CSULA Early Start courses will be through The College of Professional and Global Education (PaGE). http://earlystart.csusuccess.org

CSU Early Start Program www.csusuccess.org The CSU is saying all Early Start Programs must be completed by the middle of August. There is a cost of $182.00 for each summer course (English and Math), plus a one-time $2.00 campus service fee. Students will be automatically informed if they are eligible for a fee waiver when they log into the “Smart Page.”

How is the Need for Early Start Determined? English Placement Test (EPT), and Entry Level Math (ELM) Placement Exams The majority of entering freshmen and some lower division transfer students must take the EPT/ELM. EPT/ELM scores are the primary way to determine the need for Early Start. If there are no EPT/ELM scores, then SATI, ACT, and EAP scores are other means to determine the need for Early Start.

English Placement Test (EPT) /Entry Level Math (ELM) Placement Exam Scores and Mandatory Early Start

EPT Scores and Early Start English Like 2014, this summer students who score between 0-146 are required to take Early Start English. Students who score 147 are exempt from Early Start, but will likely be placed into English 101S fall quarter. Contact: English Department: Yolanda Galvan : 323 343- 4140

ELM Scores and Early Start Mathematics Students who score between 0-49 are required to take Early Start Mathematics. CSULA Remedial Math Course Placement: 0-29 Math 089 (Three remedial courses) 30-41 Math 090 (Two remedial courses) 42-49 Math 091 (One remedial course) 50+ University Level Math Contact: Math Department 323 343 2150

SATI Scores and Mandatory Early Start Students with SATI Verbal scores between 0-459 are required to take Early Start English. Students with SATI Verbal scores between 460-490 are EAP “Conditionally Exempt.” The EPT is “optional” for these students. Unless they are exempt through other means, this group is mandated into Early Start English. Students with SATI Math scores between 0-489 are required to take Early Start Mathematics. Students with SATI math scores between 490-540 are EAP “Conditionally Exempt.” The ELM is “optional” for these students. Unless they are exempt through other means, this group is mandated into Early Start Math.

ACT Scores and Mandatory Early Start Students with ACT English scores between 0-18 are required to take Early Start English. Students with ACT English scores between 19-21 are EAP “Conditionally Exempt.” The EPT is “optional” for these students. Unless they are exempt through other means, this group is mandated into Early Start English. Students with ACT Math scores between 0-19 are required to take Early Start Mathematics. Students with ACT Math scores between 20-22 are EAP “Conditionally Exempt.” The ELM is “optional” for these students. Unless they are exempt through other means, this group is mandated into Early Start Math. Contact: Testing Center: Suzanne McEvoy/Ron Duran/ Rosa Ibarra: 323 343 3160

Early Assessment Program (EAP) scores and Mandatory Early Start Students who have an EAP English score of 1 are completely exempt and ready for university level English. Students who have an EAP Math score of 1 are completely exempt and ready for university level math. Students who have a EAP English score of 2 are “Conditionally Exempt” and, unless they are exempt through other means, are required to take Early Start. The EPT is “optional.” Students who have an EAP math score of 2 are “Conditionally Exempt” and, unless they are exempt through other means, are required to take Early Start. The ELM is “optional.” Students who have EAP English scores of 3, and 4 are required to take Early Start. Students who have EAP Mathematics scores of 3, and 4, are required to take Early Start. CSULA EPT/ELM Test Information The CSU strongly suggests students need to test EARLY so EPT/ELM scores will be available for Early Start course placement. Most CSU campuses have EPT/ELM test deadlines for enrollment purposes, not admittance purposes. The CSULA EPT/ELM test deadline for Early Start placement was Saturday, April 4, 2015, is now Saturday May 2, 2015. The registration deadline was March 28, 2015, now April 18, 2015.

NEW EARLY START PARTICIPATION POLICIES In previous years, all EAP “Conditionally Exempt” students were exempt from participating in the Early Start Program.
