Social Control The enforcing of norms through either internal or external means.

Internalization Process by which a norm becomes part of your personality. Eating and Driving School Taking someone’s life ( Murder )

Sanctions: rewards or punishments used to enforce conformity to norms Positive: Family, teachers, employers, cheers, medals, rewards, good grades, raise, Negative: punishment or threat of punishment, fines, frowns, ridicule, imprisonment, death

Formal Sanctions: Given by a formal organization School Business Government

Informal sanctions: Spontaneous expression of approval or disapproval Positive: standing ovation, compliments, smiles, Negative: frowns, gossip, insults, exclusion from a group
