1 Chapter 7 Section 1 Deviance and Social Control

2 Deviance Refers to behavior that departs from societal or group norms
Violates norms depending on culture Either positive or negative deviance

3 Negative Deviance Involves behavior that underconforms to accepted norms Reject norms, misinterpret the norms, or are unaware of the norms Ex: someone saying they want to lose weight and get in shape so they work out for an hour a day but not changing their diet to healthy food.

4 Positive Deviance Involves behavior that over conforms to social expectation. Leads to imbalance and extremes of perfection. Ex: someone saying they want to lose weight and stay in shape but they take steroids, which causes harm to that person.

5 Deviant Person who breaks significant societal or group norms.
Ex: A person dressing flashy and in bright colors at a funeral.

6 Social Control Ways to encourage conformity to societies norms.
2 broad types of social control: Internal Social Control External Social Control

7 Internal Social Control
Doing something because its right Not doing something because its wrong Internalization: following your conscience based on your personal beliefs and morals

8 External Social Control
Doing something based on what others think Social sanctions: rewards or punishments that encourage conformity to social norms Positive sanctions- used to encourage conformity; ex: awards, job promotions, smiles of approval Negative sanctions- intended to stop socially unaccepted behaviors; ex. Criticism, fines, imprisonment
