American Literature & Contemporary Composition Standards Reading Literature Reading Informational Text Language Conventions Writing Strategies At San Pedro High students, teachers, and parents work together to make learning better!

Curriculum Map Curriculum maps at SPHS are constantly being revised. New curriculum map and list of course readings is currently being developed.

Syllabus See handout for specific readings. American Literature will focus on reading and analyzing significant American documents and literature; it will also focus on analyzing and creating examples of persuasive writing, expository writing, and narrative writing. MLA format will be emphasized. MLA format is used in English classes throughout high school and at the university level. See handout for specific readings. *NEW CURRICULUM MAP COMING SOON TO REFLECT NEW TEXTBOOKS

Grading Criteria SEMESTER GRADE COMPONENTS: -WARM-UP EXERCISES (SSR, JOURNALS, GRAMMAR) -QUIZZES AND TESTS -PROJECTS AND COOPERATIVE LEARNING ACTIVITIES -CLASSWORK AND HOMEWORK, INCLUDING CREDIT FOR ESSAY ROUGH DRAFTS -FINAL COPIES OF ESSAYS

Classroom Expectations RULES OF CONDUCT Students must be sitting silently in their seats when the tardy bell rings and must stay in their seats until the dismissal bell rings. Students must have all necessary materials with them and be prepared to learn and work collaboratively with others. Students must be respectful to other students and the teacher, and must avoid making unnecessary noise. Students must use an “indoor voice” in class, and avoid using profanity. Students must ask for permission to leave their seats when they’re working on individual assignments. Students must avoid eating food in class, but may bring drinks. Students must do their best to succeed, and refrain from any activities that interfere with their own or someone else’s education (talking about outside activities, drawing, putting head down, etc.). Students must remain after class when instructed to do so. Extra Credit for cleaning at lunch once every calendar month (10 points each time) STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED A MAXIMUM OF 7 ABSENCES IN ORDER TO ENSURE THEIR SUCCESS!

Important Information -Students must follow all rules in order to ensure a positive, productive learning environment. They must also have a section of a 3 ring binder or spiral with a pocket for handouts and work from their English class. -Only 3 passes are allowed per semester in order to ensure that students use class time efficiently. Unused passes will be used as extra credit points. -Makeup work and tests for full-credit will be given to students who have cleared absences and must be turned in within 2 weeks of the deadline. Makeup work for half-credit must also be turned in within 2 weeks. -Students need to follow rubric/checklist requirements for essays and paragraphs. MLA Documentation is also essential. -5+ tardies or 3 truancies may result in a “U” in Work Habits and loss of EC Pass Points.

Classroom Information *Extra credit opportunities: -Don’t use restroom passes. -Clean once a month during the 2nd half of lunch. *My room is generally open each day during the 2nd half of lunch. If students need help or need to show me makeup work, that’s the best time to see me. *The best way to contact me is through email rather than calling the school.

Business Academy Focus on careers in business operations, business administration, marketing and sales, financial planning, investing, banking, and real estate services. Accounting, Entrepreneurship, Tourism and Global Economy. Related electives when available: Accounting, Web Marketing, Consumer Economics, and Business Law

Other Requirements: Always follow rubric requirements for paragraphs and essays. Always use MLA Documentation for essays.  12 Font  Times New Roman  1 inch margins  Double-spaced  Last name and page number in header Center the title Works Cited at the top Begin each entry flush with the left margin  If the entry runs more than one line, indent 5 spaces List each entry alphabetically by author’s last name. If no author, use title. Always connect ideas and use sentence variety by using transitions and subordinating conjunctions. Most formal essays will be edited, revised, and rewritten three times: rough draft checked by peer editor; 2nd draft edited by me; 3rd draft = final copy. Points will be given for each draft, and the final copy will be graded the most strictly. Students are welcome to do a 4th copy if they want a higher grade.

Thank You Parents ! Teachers who care! Please feel free to contact me with any concerns. Email me at LClassen@Lausd.net. You are also welcome to attend class with your student! Teachers who care!
