5 Syllabus Sophomore English (first semester) Grading Scale
Grading Scale A standard grading scale of =A; 89-80=B; 79-70=C; 69-60= D; 59- = F Weights Work is divided into three categories: Assignments and Tests Writings Accelerated Reader 40% 50% % Tests, in class work, Journal*, essays, poems class/choice books homework Writing  Two “benchmarks” will be assigned (more may be planned). One, an Explanatory Essay and an Argument essay. Also, writing assessments will be given. This is a district mandate and they are very important. The journal is something the students need to bring everyday to class(or they may leave in portfolio). There is no excuse for not having their journal with them. It should be in the form of a spiral notebook. Students do entries in this every day and take notes in it. The journal becomes a centerpiece for the class. Students do well on it and their writing grade goes up which, in turn, allows them then to do well on tests, and the Assignments and tests grades can go up. Readings  The MyPerspectives Consumable Anthology .Novels we will read may include Lord of the Flies, Old Man and the Sea, Julius Caesar and House on Mango Street.  Parental Video Consent: Films that are PG and PG-13 may be shown as companion pieces to provide a deeper background on a particular time period, event, text or author. If you object to your child seeing anything over a G-rating please contact me by or telephone so that I can make alternate arrangements when viewing take place. Signing below will show that you are ok with showing these curriculum enhancing films or clips. Late work/absences  If a student is absent, it is their responsibility to talk to me after class, at lunch, or after school for their make up work. Make up work should say “absent” and placed in the tan box of the corresponding period. The Journal from the previous day is posted on the black board. Late work is accepted, but it is reduced (usually to a “C”) before it is graded. Late work is only acceptable during the five week grading period it was assigned. Missed tests need to be made up after school or at lunch, students need to make a time and confirm it with me. SAN PEDRO HIGH SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY A. A maximum of 7 full day absences/28 TOTAL class period absences are allowed during the current school year.B. At the 8th full day absence and/or 29th class period absence, FOR ANY REASON, the student’s name will appear on the Non-Participation STOP CLEARANCE LIST. Communication: I am a firm believer that communication is essential to being successful. Whether it’s communicating difficulties via , or addressing concerns over the phone I try to make myself readily available. I also believe in transparency and bringing everyone in on the process by posting agendas, handouts, and grades online at the website. If you have any suggestions, ideas, or insights about a project, website, or educational opportunity for the students, please let me know. I look forward to a rewarding and exciting year. Sincerely, Mr. Patchell
