Movement & Migration

Migration Migration is the physical movement of humans from one area to another, sometimes over long distances or in large groups. Immigration – Migrating “to” Example – “He immigrated to Poland” Emigration – Migrated “from” Example – “I emigrated from America”

What causes people to move? Economic – jobs, opportunities Social – family, marriage, culture Political – refugees, religious persecution eNvironmental - unlivable conditions

Push & Pull The push factor involves a force which acts to drive people away from a place and the pull factor is what draws them to a new location. Push Factors Not enough jobs Slavery or forced labour Poor medical care Loss of wealth Natural disasters Primitive conditions Lack of political or religious freedom Death threats Pollution Poor housing Few opportunities Desertification Famine or drought Political fear or persecution Pull Factors Job opportunities Better living conditions Political/religious freedom Enjoyment Education Better medical care Attractive climates Security Family links Industry

Migration & Population Pyramids

Bantu Migration – Push or Pull? Experts suggest once these peoples developed agriculture and iron working, they were able to produce more food. As a result, the population of West Africa increased. Because this enlarged population required more food, the earliest Bantu speakers planted more land. Soon there wasn't enough land to go around, so they had to move. Was this a Push factor or a Pull factor?

Industrial Revolution 1750 – 1850 Began in the United Kingdom and spread throughout the world Rapid progress in mining, agriculture, & technology. Living standards increased, as did global population. Beginning of modern population growth
