2 What is migration? Migration is the movement of people from one place to another.

3 Internal Migration is when people migrate within the same country or region  Moving from South Dakota to Utah Moving from South Dakota to Utah  Moving from the country (rural area) to the city (urban area)  Resulting in urbanization – growth of cities

4 International Migration is when people migrate from one country to another  Moving from the United States to France Interactive Map

5 Who migrates? Emigrant – someone who permanently exits or leaves a country. Emigrants leave Africa to find a better home.

6 Who migrates? Immigrant – someone who permanently moves into a country Immigrants move into Germany from Turkey.

7 Why do people migrate? Economic migration - moving to find work or follow a particular career path. Social migration - moving somewhere for a better quality of life or to be closer to family or friends. Political migration - moving to escape political persecution or war. Environmental causes of migration include natural disasters such as flooding.

8 What is the Push-Pull Factor? Push factors are the reasons why people leave an area. On your paper list at least three pushes or reasons why people would leave an area. 9 What is the Push-Pull Factor? Pull factors are the reasons why people move to a particular area. On your paper write at least three pulls or reasons why people would move to an area? 10 Migration usually happens as a result of a combination of the push and pull factors. Push: unemployment Pull: job opportunities Push: unsafe conditions Pull: Safe environment

11 A Special Type of Immigrant Refugee – a person who flees to a foreign country to escape danger or persecution

12 Difference between a refugee and an immigrant Refugees  Fleeing for their lives  Protected by international law  May be supported by the world community Immigrants  Leave home for many reasons  Are not protected under international law
