The population of the United States Grew Rapidly in the Early 1800s with the arrival of millions of immigrants

Pull Factors Push Factors These are reasons people were pulled to America: Job Opportunities Greater Political and Economic Freedom and Equality Cheap Abundant Land These are reasons people were pushed out of their home country: Starvation and Famine Poverty and Lack of Jobs Lack of Political and Religious Freedom

4 Bad Luck of the Irish A potato Famine in Ireland leads many Irish Citizens to leave and come to the united states Irish Immigrants moved to the big cities of New York Massachusetts, New jersey, and Pennsylvania working at unskilled low paying jobs in the cities Men often were railroad and canal builders while women worked for wealthy Families Though low wages forced Irish Immigrants to live in poor housing there was still more freedom than in Ireland

5 German Town German Immigrants came to the United States for Freedom from their harsh governments Germans Came to the united states with money and were able to move to the Midwestern states While some Germans were able to buy farms, most worked as low paid tailors, seamstresses, servants, artisans and in the food industry

6 A very uninformed Party
As Immigration Increased, people began to fear the loss of their job or the threat of a new culture Nativists began to oppose Immigration and formed the Know-Nothing Party to make citizenship more difficult to Gain Policies Included banning Catholics from Public Office and requiring a wait period of 21 years for citizenship The Know-Nothing party did gain political success, but fell apart over the issue of slavery

7 Working for the Weekend
As Immigration, and the Transportation Revolution Spread, Cities in the north saw HUGE population increases The Rise of Cities led to the Rise of the middle class as skilled workers and professionals began to make more money and spend more on lifestyle The Rise of the middle class would also lead to the rise of leisure activities and the concept of the weekend The Lower Class would live and work in the overcrowded cities and live in worse conditions due to their low pay

8 No Lights, Dirty Cities Due to overcrowding in the cities many city dwellers lived in small, dirty, over crowded Tenement apartments Public conditions in cities were also poor with dirty conditions, poor water quality, and the spread of diseases Big Cities often Became unsafe due to the lack of police and fire departments, and crime was very common in the cities The Lack of Sanitation Workers also led the dirty conditions of the cities to get worse
