National Honor Society Information for NHS Candidates Selection Procedures & Completing the Student Information Form

Chapter Purpose *To create an enthusiasm for scholarship *To encourage the development of strong character *To promote leadership *To foster a desire to participate in community service

Step 1: Eligibility Criteria Be a junior or a senior Have a minimum GPA of 90.00 @ the end of last year Possess exemplary leadership, service and character in and out of the classroom

Step 2: Student Information Form Documents evidence of exemplary leadership & service. Failure to provide sufficient evidence of leadership and service in Parts II, III and IV may result in non-selection. Only include items from freshman year on. No middle school data. Most important piece, Stress that failure to show evidence on this often results in the student not being accepted.

Student Information Form You can supply copies of programs, certificates, etc. as proof. Complete this form in ink. Print clearly. Parent signatures-only acceptable if the sponsor is no longer available OF if parent was sponsor Parent signatures are the EXCEPTION-not the rule. If the committee sees many parent signatures, it looks like the student did not take the time or initiative to go out and get the signatures.

Leadership ALL ELECTED and APPOINTED leadership positions in school, community or work activities while in high school. -Positions in which you were directly responsible for directing or motivating others should be included. If the teacher appointed you as the leader of say the section or a committee, have the teacher sign for it. Being a “self-appointed” leader of a 3 or 4 person group such as your video group isn’t what we are looking for since each of you could say you were the leader since nothing is official. However, you may have had a time when you took on the leadership role in order to make your group successful and meet deadlines. IF you truly took on this role, a teacher/sponsor would know about it and would need to sign for it. For example, you might not be an officer in an organization, but you spearheaded projects and “took charge” of them, you are showing leadership. Have the sponsor sign for that.

Service Activities ALL service activities you participated in for the benefit of the others while in high school. Activities that are done OUTSIDE of the school day for or on behalf of others for which no compensation ($) has been given. Things that you did in the summer ARE included.

Service Activities Things you do for your family such as babysitting, cooking and mowing are NOT service. Be sure and explain the activity and the frequency. Ex.-1 hr every other week for 12 weeks.

Co-curricular Activities ALL activities you have participated in while in high school (within school and outside of school.) This includes clubs, teams, organizations. Once again, this includes the summer.

Recognition and Awards List any recognition and/or award that you have received during high school that supports your candidacy for membership. These can be from school or outside of school.

Supplemental Information Optional section To explain extenuating circumstances such as long-term illness, family problems that have affected participation and so forth.

Step 3: Faculty Evaluation The teachers will complete a Faculty Evaluation form evaluating each candidate on the basis of character and leadership. Low faculty evaluations may result in nonselection.

Submission Deadline Student Information Packets are due by Oct. 30th by 9:50 a.m.. to Mrs. Malik or Mrs. Whitus in C115 or C205. Forms will NOT be accepted after the deadline. Plan to get it in ahead of time in case you are absent. School business is NOT an acceptable excuse.

Step 4: Final Selection The Student Information Packets and Faculty Evaluation Forms will be reviewed by the Faculty Council for final selection.

Candidate Responsibilities Turn in completed packet to sponsors by the due date. Late packets will not be considered. Results/notifications will go out in November. Induction will be Nov. 15th at 7 p.m. (Be there by 6:30) The first NHS meeting for new members will be in Dec. 7th . New members’ service hours begin begin Jan. 22nd . Service hours done before Jan. 18th are great, but they will not count toward your NHS requirements.

Notification Every candidate will receive a letter stating the decision—selected or not selected. An opportunity to appeal the decision will be explained in the letter.

Member Responsibilities Monthly Chapter Meetings - 1st Wednesday of each month Chapter Service-4 hrs with chapter Individual Service-7 hours Service Points are due at the end of each semester. Bylaws-you are responsible for info. Grade check each six weeks.
