If you have any questions, please wait until the end of the meeting. I don’t want to hold everybody for a question that might only apply to a few people.

3. Requirements for Invitation
One of the requirements to be invited into NHS is to maintain a 90+ non-rounded cumulative average since the 9th grade.
Since you are sitting in this meeting, then you have obviously met that requirement.
You also must have attended ELHS for 2 consecutive semesters. This is a requirement.

4. Invitation
The application meeting that you are in today is mandatory, so if you know someone who did not attend today, then they cannot apply.

5. Steps to Obtain Membership
In order to obtain membership in NHS you must complete the application, turn in 10 teacher recommendations, and be voted in by the faculty council.

6. Application
In order to become a member of NHS you must have at least 9 service ACTIVITES (not hours).
You must have at least 1 activity in each category: community, school, and leadership.
Each activity must be signed by an adult.
If you have more than 9, list them just in case the faculty council does not accept one.

7. Community Service
Community service is any service done outside of school and not with a school organization.
Ex: church service activities, nursing home visits, food bank volunteer, etc.

8. School Service
School service is any activity done at school or with a school organization.
Ex: completing a service activity with Beta Club, helping a teacher, cleaning concession stands, peer tutoring, etc.

9. Leadership
Leadership is holding a leadership position in or out of school.
Ex: section leader in band, captain of a team, officer of another club, Chick-fil-a leadership academy, Eagle Ambassador, Sunday School teacher, scout leader, etc.

10. Non-Service Activities
The following are common “service” activities that students list but do not count: being a member of a club, being in the band, playing on a team, babysitting, helping with the family business, participating in school events for a grade, etc.

11. FAQ about Service What if I can’t think of 9 activities?
The faculty council looks for 9, so you could still apply, but your chances would be slim.
What if I don’t have an activity in each area?
Again, you can still apply, but your chances would be slim.
What if I don’t know if an activity counts?
You can come ask me before the application is due, or you can list more than 9, just in case.

12. FAQ about Service
What if I helped at VBS for 25 hours, does that only count as one activity?
Yes, the number of hours does not matter. The faculty council looks for 9 different activities.

13. Application Deadline
The application must be turned in to me by Friday, October 18th at 3:45pm. No late applications will be accepted for any reason. If you are absent, then you should have turned it early or have someone drop it off for you.
Turn the application in early if possible!!

14. Teacher Recommendations
Today you will receive 10 teacher recommendation sheets. You need to give them to your 6 or 7 teachers this year, and 3 or 4 teachers from last year. The teachers from last year must be for academic subjects such as math, science, English, social studies, or foreign language.
Hand them out today to give the teachers time to fill them out. Some teachers receive many forms.

15. Faq for teacher rec’s
I only have a few classes at ELHS this year, so can I ask my academy or dual enrollment teachers?
Yes, they can me the results.
All of my previous teachers last year left, so what do I do?
You can ask non-academic teachers if you have to in order to get the 10 recommendations.

16. Faq for teacher rec’s
I have the same teacher this year that I had last year, do I have them fill out 2 recommendations?
Yes, they can fill out two, just make sure that they list the classes that they had you for.

17. Faculty council
The faculty council is made of 5 teachers at the school. Ms. Witham and Ms. Borders are NOT on the faculty council.
The council will review your application and vote on your membership.

18. Faculty council
You will receive a letter that tells the outcome of the vote.
The faculty council vote is final, and the teacher recommendations are anonymous.
If you make it in, then our meeting calendar is posted outside my door.

19. More faq
I lost my application/teacher recommendation, can I get more copies?
No, NHS members are responsible, so you will not receive another copy.
I transferred here this year, am I still eligible?
No, you must have attended ELHS for 2 consecutive semesters

20. More faq
I can’t make it to school this early in the morning. Can I still join NHS?
Our meetings are the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:40am. The meetings are mandatory, so if you can’t make it, then you will be removed from the club.

21. Reasons the faculty council votes no
The most common reasons that a student does not get into NHS are:
1. You did not turn in the application.
2. You did not have 9 service activities.
3. You had 9 service activities, but the faculty council did not count one or more.
4. You did not have 1 activity in each area.

5. You had one or more concerning teacher recommendations. 6. You have had discipline problems (Ex: ISS).
