Candidate Information Meeting

2 Purpose To create an enthusiasm for scholarship
To stimulate a desire to render service To promote worthy leadership To encourage the development of character in students of Gar- Field Senior High School

3 Scholarship 3.6 (non-rounded) GPA
Not about being the most skilled or intellectual person

4 Scholarship About having an intellectual curiosity that drives one to not only enjoy learning new things, but to also have the persistence and integrity to apply oneself to understanding difficult concepts. 

5 Scholarship Through hard work you strive to become a more educated individual that is better suited to initiating positive changes in society.

6 Character A student of good character
Upholds principles of morality and ethics Is cooperative Demonstrates high standards of honesty and reliability Shows courtesy, concern, and respect for others Must be modeled through example

7 Leadership The influence you have on people to do something extraordinary   Leadership experiences can be drawn from school or community activities while working with or for others.  

8 Leadership Student leaders are Resourceful Good problem solvers
Promoters of school activities Idea-contributors Dependable Persons who exemplify positive attitudes about life

9 Service  Defined through the voluntary contributions made to the school or community Done without monetary compensation, and with a positive, courteous, and enthusiastic spirit   Not just to satisfy a requirement set by NHS, or for college applications, but to help another through reaching out to them

10 Member Responsibilities
More than an honor An ongoing responsibility and an obligation to continue to demonstrate those outstanding qualities that result in a student’s selection Also carries a responsibility to the chapter If our NHS chapter is to be effective and meaningful, each member must be involved.  Meeting attendance Participation in chapter service project Individual service

Get #Futuready—a series of videos and visual aids to help you with everything from career exploration to mastering interviews  Virtual NHS--limited-seating workshops address important topics related to the fundamentals of college application essay preparation College webinars for guidance on college admission and financial aid.  NHS Scholar Dollars—scholarship search engine produces results aligned to the membership pillars of NHS.  The NHS Scholarship program. All NHS seniors in good standing are eligible to apply in the fall of each year.

15 Extra-curricular Activities and Leadership Positions
List all activities in which you have participated during high school. Include clubs, sports, musical groups, church activities, work experiences, etc.  Indicate major accomplishments and leadership positions.  It is imperative that you list the duration of involvement as well as duration of leadership position.

18 Service Activities List all activities in which you have participated to support and improve your community.   Note any major accomplishments.  Documenting evidence is required that will include how many hours you volunteered and the signature and phone number of an adult sponsor.  REMEMBER: Service Activities are volunteered time and work which is nonpaid.  Examples may include working at a homeless shelter, in a nursing home, or working with a group of youngsters where you are not paid for your service.

List all leadership positions you have held.  Note any major accomplishments and provide specific information on why these positions should be considered leadership positions. Indicate how you organized and managed a group of people.  Please remember that the position has to be sustained, meaning that it must be for more than a few days—this should be listed under Duration of Position.  Please provide the name and phone number of a sponsoring adult.

Have you had any (high school) suspensions, code of conduct violations, or detentions? If so, indicate the year and offer an explanation.  Explain what you have learned from the experience. Also, please list any special circumstances that the Faculty Council should consider.
